OG's around the early 2000's were definitely different than today....they have gotten sweeter and more floral like skunk....but they were very abrasive and hashy when they 1st started leaking out as production....

Also ran five whiteberry and one of those was similar... Both are Paradise so that's where I'd be looking.

There was a local strain here in NW Florida that was piney as hell. It sold as That Pine Tree Smelling Weed, lol. This was late 80's-early 90's.

I was joking. Back then most weed didn't have names and most of the growers were red necks. You just called the local by the growers name and maybe a descriptive if he ran more than one strain, like Carlos' Cream or Jack's Purple.
But then when Northern Lights and Afghani burst on the scene, that is what everyone claimed to be growing. In fact the two parent strains of my old school Jack Carlos Cross crosses where sold as NL and Af, even though they are both Sativa leaning.
When Cali Con Swerve and Company tried to make their own OGz they ruined the Gene pool.... They mixed in Afi #1 in the OG genes to make a male to cross back with.... in an attempt to make OG in a pure seed form they made more fakes and dilluted crap...
The real deal old school OGz are still the best genetics ... Elite in all categories ... potency, terps, YIELD yes Yield...
Alot of the original cuts got sick and most people dont know how to revive these magical strains

Life gets in the way, even for big name breeders. To keep a strain the same, you have to take fresh cuts of the mother and father plant a couple three times a year. Lose either one of them, and the strain is gone. But rather than say, "hey, I lost the mom", they will try popping lots of seeds and finding the same pheno, and keep the cash flowing.
Just because breeders have big names, do not mean they live in fine houses and drive fancy cars. In fact most of the breeders I know have to turn product just to make ends meet. Many of them rent, so there is always the risk of having to move your whole operation when your lease is up. Plants die, and sometimes clones don't root. That is how strains get to be shell of their old self. Because they are not the same strains.

I have seen very few "breeders" in cannabis, at least in the scientific sense....thats a big part of the problem imho
Yes, legality is one way a strain is lost into the ether, but imho its laziness from people who call themselves "breeders"
again I guess it boils down to what is considered an actual breeder, not to take shots, but most if not all are glorified pollen chucks these days....working a line is tough in the era of plant counts, but the old tymers did it with NO counts, lol and where would we be without our base?
That same base is going to be around for the next generation too in 20 years imho, mainly because we stopped working stuff....I hope I am wrong and we have a revival, but strain hunting is a lost art.....The "collection" itself is "better" seems to be the forte these days....possibilities instead of action and that to me is the bigger cause of strain loss......

I know three breeders, two of which are known names. {at least on RIU} They take lots of care in their crosses. Lots of searching and testing. I agree there are a lot of pollen chuckers, of which I am one. But there are also thousands of gentleman breeders. My other breeder friend is in this group. They don't sell seeds, or if they do, the price is just a token. The last ones I paid for were 15 bucks a 10 pack. Most give their seeds to friends at no cost, not even postage. I feel breeding is at an all time high. But money grubbing guys on IG can change your perspective. There are more out there that are making good crosses, but never post to social media.

We are seed makers.....but making seed isn't what makes me not call them breeders.....It is the science of breeding itself...for instance, I breed out of necessity now....I am above 45N and 99% of seed on the market, does terrible in this local climate....that's one aspect of breeding imo....adjusting for that...

The three topdawg strains I have grown all have a sweet pine taste. Star dawg IX, underdawg d, and sour dawg. That was one of the things that disappointed me most, roll the finished product up, and it's,almost like they are all the same....almost. None had any pine smell when in the bag though,all smelled foul with hints of diesel. They all tasted very very similar when smoked though......8 phenos combined of the three I mentioned.

Getaway Mountain breeds for the wet, cold Maine weather. Crossing Semiautomatics with photos trying to get the right mix of early and mold resistance. He has been working on them for years. Jaws gave out some Xmas Bud IBL freebies awhile back..i had afew..flowered one lady and she does smell piney..once i trim it up and jar it I will report back on smell. Maybe some pics.
