Newbie wants a second opinion.

Ello folks, joined this forum to get a second opinion and think I might stick around since I'm seeing a lot of informative posts.

This is my first grow. Hydro the first time around. So basically let me give a run-down of my setup. It was low-budget and more of an experiment than an actual attempt at bud production.

Strain is an indica. Germinated seeds from a local grower.

3x3ft plywood 'closet' is the growspace.
Inside of the closet is lined with bubble insulation, and then covered with mylar. No crinkles in the paneling what-so-ever. There is a hole in the back with a vent & fan which goes out a nearby window next to my AC unit.

Due to my budget, I'm stuck using fluorescent lighting. CFLs weren't an option right now since I didn't want to drop that much money, so I decided to try my own ideas. I found a bunch of old 2 foot ballasts in the garage and decided to use them. At the top of the box is 4 typical 2 foot, 40watt fluro ballasts. I'm using 2 typical white bulbs and 2 fish tank bulbs.
On the sides of the growspace I have 2x 225 red & blue LED grow light panels, above and below each panel are 2 more fluro ballasts with 1 white and 1 fish bulb.

I'm using a 20-20-20 mix for vegetative and am still deciding what to do for flowering/budding.

The hydro system is a Stealth Hydroponics kit. Air pump, bought a 200watt fishtank heater for water temp. The box sits around 78-80 degrees with the rest of my house at 70.

So far I have 3 plants, they're about 10 inches in length. I'm using weights and twine to train them to bush since I don't have much space. I'll get pictures when I can find my camera.

I guess the biggest question is, does this sound like it might actually work? I know fluros aren't ass good as HID, but I've seen some results... not GREAT results, but results never-the-less.

it should work but don't expect the best results with those lights. buy some cfl's as you can afford them and add them to the grow. the led;s are probably worthless btw

CFL's are only $1 - 10 for the home lights so they are not that much.
OHHH, you're talking about the spiral CFL for home lighting?

I've got about 25 of them sitting around here.

You guys are super helpful.. Loving this place already. :)

ok cool so you have those now look at the bulbs and see what the Kelvin is ..... its either around 2700K or 5600K Use the ones around 5600K for veg and the ones closer to 2700K for flower. If you dont see any number on the lights that end with K just go to the manufacturers web site and type in the product # and it will give you all the info. You are looking for the Highest Wattage and Highest Lumens and also llok for the Kelvins for which bulbs to use when.

Cool dude, appreciate it.

These are 5500K and I have a 12 pack of them. Looks like I'll be going to Lowes and building my own light assemblies today. :)

Use the ones with the highest wattage and lumens!!!!!! Or just pick some new ones up at HD or Lowes.
Good for Veg or get higher wattage - make sure its Daylight

Good for flower

Crikey . . . looks like a guy could get the next best lights for the price of a few of these cfl's. I had no idea they could fetch that kind of money. That's whack?

Thats not the price .... thats how much you save a year with a wattage equivelent .......

So I basically rigged me up a little home-made reflector.

I bought me the longest power-strip I could and got the light plugs. 4 CFLs in the strip, and the strip into my light timer.

Went all-out and bought the big 100watt equivalent mamma-jammas.

I must pay better attention. I mean, I'm not too keen on cfl's simply because they are pretty hot for what they do . . . and when I saw those #'s . . . well, don't I feel the fool! They're still too hot for what they do, IMO.

They are a little hot, but not extremely bad. The growbox is at about 90 degrees with the cooling system off and the CFLs.

When the exhaust fans get turned on it goes down to about 82-83.

Keep the exhaust fan on and keep it cool! 90 is to hot .... well its just not ideal cause I have had mine get that hot but you dont want it that hot for long periods of time and it can cause problems. If you keep the grow box at 90 degrees it will effect your grow by 1. raising your water temps stunting growth or promoting unwanted growth in your tank. 2. having your plant start to stretch

Keep a loose fan on them. I say this with a smile becasue i cooling a 400 watt dif and cooling the cfls i just put a fan on them and bam no heat. The first time i tried it i was like , nah, must be a fluke! Dont i need a nother 300 dollar duct system too now, lol. Seriously good luck u sound like yur doing good. Careful at hydro stores cops watch suspicous chars.

Thanks for all of the info.

Here in 2 weeks I'm going to buy a HID. Buddy of mine has a 250Watt ballast with a MH bulb he is going to sell me for $85 to get me on my feet. For now these CFLS are working fine.

I drilled 2 more ports in my box for cooling and ran another exhaust vent.
Down to 80 degrees, reservoir temperature is a steady 76-77 and honestly has not moved even when the box was getting hot.
