And this is a thread about quantum boards. You are derailing and distracting from the purpose of this thread. You are asking if anyone is building a competitive product in the thread for guys that are selling these for their livelihood and it is bad etiquette to say the least. Make your own thread and start your own conversation. This is almost as bad as the guy copying their design and then trying to sell it in this thread.

We have a prebuilt QB fixture called the HLG-550. It's around 1250 umol today output and 2.45+ umol/j. Not sure in the specs of that fixture you speak of but I'm pretty sure the HLG-550 can hold it's own. The price difference is pretty big too.

I nearly finished my build and wanted to show it to you guys because i got many inspiration and help from here, and wanted to share my version to maybe inspire someone else ;)

So basically it is a 1m x 1m (3.2ft x 3.2ft) 4mm thick aliminium plate which i designed with sketchup. The laser cutting itself has been made by a company.

(It's only a flowering Light, and not meant to have the spectrums for the veg stage.)

Specs:
6x QB 288 3000K --> driven by 2x HLG-H240-C1400A @ ~1000mA
12x Nichia 108 2700K & 4 Nichia 108 5000K --> driven by 2x HLG-H185-C700A @ ~500mA
16x Epistar Far-Red 730nm (flower initiation) --> driven by PLD-25-700 @ 700mA
1x 24W UV Bulb (only for testing purposes - semi crappy reptile T5 bulb )

I Painted the aluminium in white with Heat resistant spray for better light reflection and the look itself ;)

Power consumption (of course depends on the current) is between 470W - 920W
Special thanks to @Growmau5, for providing so much (free) knowledge and ideas,
and @robincnn for the nice customer service !
But of course thanks to all the other guys !!

Mind me asking what that Aluminum ended up costing you? Im designing and building a light with diode strips and monos (only cause i tried to buy QB's three times and were sold out before i could all 3 times so i went samsung H strips). An aluminum heatsink and mounting like that is exactly what im looking for but everywhere ive investigated its been super expensive to have something nice vs just a raw chunk of scrap aluminum.

The material itself plus the cutting cost me 140€. I dont know your budget, but that seemed preeeetty fair to me. I contacted more than one company, and this one was by far the cheapest. Others wanted about 400€ (Also on Ebay, where the offering companies mostly were polish)

I hope you will find a cheap offer soon. Btw i got the same problem (with sold out QBs but emailed HLG and they provided me the Boards, althought it was "sold out" on their homepage)

Okay, that makes me feel better. My budget is i can spend as much as i want realistically, but spending as much just on the heatsink as the actual LEDs was leaving a sour taste in my mouth. The pricing i was finding everywhere is in line with your 400 euros(600CAD). Guess ill have to keep looking because for 140 euros(200cad) id be satisfied with that. Time to go back to looking some more i was settling on having an ugly light because it was just too expensive at $600 just to not look ugly.

Actually i found that offer offline. I just googled manufaturers in my close area and was lucky to find one. So maybe do the same and dont only search for "online"-companies :)

that seems pretty nice. Here where i live they let you pay for the cutting length, not for the spend time, tough they depend on each other (time - cutting length) so basically it probably is nearly the same...

I never accused you of anything, i said ettitiquette its just as bad. You admitted you posted it here selfishly just to get more eyeballs. I was trying to not be too rude about it but saying if you want to talk about osram builds go make an osram build thread. I almost bought QBs but didnt and my postings are all in a thread about the stripper lights i did go with in the bridgelux EB thread.

No need to get so worked up about it buddy, i was just saying go make your own thread, because if it explodes in discussion like the bridgelux EB thread has youre gonna add an extra 50 pages to this that has nothing to do with QB's. Get it?

All my searches have been offline. I work in the construction industry so im around metal dealers very regularly the price of the aluminum wasn't where the prohibitive cost was coming from it was on the machining/cutting work. If i know its possible to find i'll keep looking i just assumed i wasnt going to find a better deal, now i know i can.

Sorry man, i didnt mean it that way. Was just trying to say theres a bunch of different build options and if you talk about them all in one thread it becomes giant and cumbersome for anyone to sort through. Meanwhile youve got a guy trying to do it as a business so its likely costing him customers. If you thought i was comparing you to scum i apologize, i just meant your bad ettiquette would cost him customers.

Edit: trust me man, i encourage all these discussions, if you sort thru what i kindly refer to the stripper lights thread (bridgelux eb build) you will see that. Goodluck on your light hunt.

I also over reacted but atm im kinda obsessed with cobs and leds so figure the best place to get solid info is threads like this where all the post arent a load of crap,ill happily delete my comments in good faith

I stopped promoting my controller anywhere around here, because I would rather not sell anything than be a part of this now. To be clear my controller controls eight fixtures not one fixture for less money. That is called kick backs, something I rejected some time ago. I used to work in Vegas I know what a kickback looks like. I was offered plenty of those in Vegas I refused them all. Pay a fee to play along and we will take care of you. same here. no different. bad business.

Not really sure who you are addressing here but there are no kickbacks from us.

Also we see the industry heading in a certain direction. Monos are ok in a greenhouse where they provide only supplementary light but look at the fine print. All the bigger companies are enhanced white for primary lighting. Funny thing is we have been in the inside for a while. We where offered samples of those Sunplus LEDs in 2015. Still am not impressed with the performance vs Osram SSL series. There are other serious led companies that believe like us that phosphor conversion will be king. We have samples of those coming soon. As I've said we don't rest. It's cool that everyone jumped at the 561Cs as they are a great led....... Not the only great one though.8)

Don't get me wrong the real reason people add red is to achieve higher efficacy. A 50% efficient 660nm led is knocking on the door of 3 umol/j. Still more than one way to skin a cat.
