Reverse Osmosis Advice

been looking at the reverse osmosis systems on ebay, the cheaper 100$ range ones 75-100gpd,, does anyone use this type with success or are they junk? im needing to produce about 20 gallons a week online and tired of having to drive to get water everytime, my standard tap water ppm is around 550

I don't own one but have read elsewhere about personal experience concerning them. Doomsday prepper type stuff.

The brand to have is Watts. At first it'll test out at high PPM. Takes some gallons to flush the carbon dust out. It can be stored wet. It's recommended to be stored wet.

Mounted to something portable. You don't have to hang it under a sink. I've seen examples to where it's mounted on a four wheel, wood, dolly. Plug up for the garden hose.

For drinking water and gardening I use the kits from ebay that come with 4 gallon tanks. Sometimes it's a pain to hookup the feed line under a sink and get it to stop leaking. My tap is about 350ppm and after the RO it's 14.

I use RO water. Just remember it strips it all out. So you need to put it all in as far as a plant goes. There are some nutes that don't give all the essential elements. The amount your looking for it might not matter. But one thing that is good to consider is how much waste water will be produced and what you'll do with it. My system has a motor to increase PSI. That brings waste to a minimum. I think the best you'll find is 1:1.25. Poor water pressure means more waste. I've got my waste going out to water my lawn. But can be fixed to drain to cesspool or what ever you have. I didn't want to fill my cesspool with this.

I RO water.
It's for my plants but I'm proud to drink it.
My "100gph" which i got ripped off and probably got a 50gph makes about 20 gallons in 12 hours.
I would highly recommend a clean (new) 55 gallon drum to fill overnight, baby sitting an RO machine is bogus.
Make sure 55 gal is on concrete aka not the 2nd floor.(heavy ..duh)

My filter takes 8.5pH 800ppm water and turns it to 6pH 15ppm water.
Just don't use it for coffee. coffee made with 8pH water is 5pH. 6pH+coffee grounds = too acidic
peace.

which RO machine do you use i ended up getting the small one from purewater.com ..

So making coffee with RO is not healthy?

r.o does NOT strip all minerals like distilled does, some cheaper ones do have issues with the glues used in the membranes. I have used the cheaper ones from purewaterclub and they are ok. I now use a hydrologic 200 gpd. as stated, babysitting a r.o unit sucks. use a 50 gal barrel, make sure to use a float valve for emergency shut off. And Make sure you have a way to warn yourself when it is time to turn off.

your base nutes should have enough to replace what r/o takes out. you may need to up the amount to cover the loss.
If not, you may need to add cal/mag. occaisionally

Damn , I've been drinking coffee made with RO for years. I use RO for all my cooking needs.
The problems with RO is the waste water. I've seen some that will waste almost 5 gallons of water to make 1 gallon of RO. Addition of a booster pump can get it down to a 2-1 ratio.

My nutrients are made for use with RO.

I actually have a hydrologic RO that doesn't work, never did from day one. Only drops my water by 10 ppm.
Granted I live in an area with high sulfur content in our groundwater and they use hydrogen peroxide injection to eliminate the sulfur smell and taste.

hey were in indiana too, im not so much worried about the waste water since we have a flat rate for the water bill unlimited use since our town never did hook up the water meters....

Its just that our water has like 469 ppm if i could get it down to 100 range i would be happy, im only needing around 15-20 g a week,

i may have bought a piece of junk, i guess ill see I just did not want to put down around 200$ for RO at this time and i actually found a few good reviews of the purewater one

My water utility charges $75 a month for up to 3,000 gallons, then goes up after that. I no longer live where the sulfur is a problem but now my water is in the low 400 ppm range with almost 300 ppm of that as calcium carbonate.

The filter guys is who I used. These guys answer the phones THEMSELVES. I believe it's 2 brothers. If you call you will speak with one of them. They will talk you through it. You can call when it arrives and they'll stay on the phone to help you install it. I called them back to order replacement filters. They knew what I had and what needed replacing. Sent instructions with pictures to help install them. No better costumer service is possible.

I bought a cheap 2 stage RO filter second hand for about $20, it's one of the $100ish ones off ebay that someone else used for one grow. It's perfect for watering the plants. My tap water is a high ppm like you, usually around 250-350ppm, and with this filter I am now getting 10-20ppm water. Only complaint is that it wastes a lot of water and takes a while to fill a 20L bucket.
