Seed position root tip up or down in rw?

Hey guys. I just want to get this straight, when placing your germinated seed into rw do you place the root tip up or down in the rw? i have been looking at some amsterdamn sites and they say root tip up is the proper orientation for the root to properly use its energy to emerge the embrio leaves on the surface. I have been sowing them root tip down and i did notice that the one seedling i had used its energy to reposition itself when i pulled it out it was curled around. Any body else have some input on this? thanks guys.

Ive always used root tip down, and i dont have any problems unless you plant them too deep. Then they have a bend in them somtimes but it doesn't effect growth much.

Their was one seedling that i had, That had the two coytledons open but nothing happened for days so i pulled it out and the root had looped around in a circle then i guess ran outta energy. How come on all these amsterdam sites they tell us root tip up, just doesnt make sense to me!

You're on rollitup.org now. You're with people who actively grow and know what the hell they're talking about. The advice you've been given here is to plant the ROOT TIP DOWN. Now whether you chose to believe amsterdam... or us, is your decision.

look at were the point of the seed is that end of the seed goes down itll grow twords the light so not the most important thing ever. pointed side down, if the root is pointing the other way its ok... point down

hey you can put the root up or down but it is best to put the root facing up coz it does this weird turn thing and pushes the seed up. make sure the white root is still covered though or it will pop thru the dirt. if you germinate with paper towels first you will notice the white root curls and that is the turn thing i am talking about. im not a scientist so i cant tell you in exact detail what happens but trust me. i have had seeds sprout thru the dirt within 24 hours with root up where it took 4 days for ones that where root down. no harm in both but alot easier root up. hope this is helpful.

also if you dont give your sprouts sunlight asoon as they come thru the dirt the stem will keep growing upwards because the plant is looking for sunlight. just something i have learnt

True, planting root tip up will not stop the seedling from sprouting... but I disagree with you that it is BETTER. In fact, My experiments have shown that root tip DOWN is MUCH better. Thats where its MEANT to go, and if you have already pointed it into the right direction, you have saved it some effort and saved the process some time.

Thanks guys you both have good insight into this! Q - T or whatever your handle is? sorry, lol. Good point on having the sproutling shaded a little to search for the light as opposed to direct light i wouldnt have thought of it that way im going to try that experiment as well. I have a seedling right now the stem is so short on it couldnt figure out why it didnt grow as tall as before i guess all the light is right their for it.

I always put them on their side and let them decide, seems to work pretty well. And yes, as soon as one or two break ground you'll want to get them under lights. I use a double tube fluorescent shop lite for this with the seedlings 2" from the bulbs.

yea i also think root tip up if its only pokink out of the seed a bit if you been busy or whatever and have germinated them ready to plant last week and they are still in the paper towel with really long stem. plant it downwards

2'' from bulb was just about to ask a similar question. what watt are your fluros im about to bya 36 watt will 2 '' be sweet or more like 6?

If they've been in there for a week the really long thing is the root not the stem.

The reason for planting root tip up is so the seed will have enough leverage to pull out of the soil.

If you plant root down, you have to make sure the seed doesn't get pulled under, the taproot will pull the seed along with it as it roots.

I plant root down, but gently scrape away the soil if the seed doesn't pop out after two days.

If you plant root up, the root will go around the seed, and pull it above the soil, either way, they both work.

i havent been having sucess sowing them root down, so i germed 2 seeds yesterday they have cracked already so i tried this time root tip up and gently brushed the rw hopefully this works, i have a seedling right now that is developing the first set of small leaves but its coming along so slow but its still growing so im gonna leave it and see what happens, i'll post a pic later after work.

Just 2 40W cool white, 48". You can get close, they aren't hot- prevents stretching and gives them more lumens. The first 2 wks don't show a lot of growth because they are establishing roots, then they really take off. (PS- you'll want a small fan on them, too.)
