Was the election influenced by a foreign power?

Two analytical reports came out this week about the spread of fake news before the election - and beyond.

I can't really speak for one of the sources yet as it is not immediatly clear if the study is by a credible organization or not. But the other was put out by an institute that I am very familiar with. I tend to accept the findings of the later.

Those finding were that there was a coordinated Russian effort to create and diseminate fake news items that:
  • Sought to undermine confidence in American democracy and democratic institutions, especially the press.
  • Sought to benefit Donald Trump's election bid.
The Russians reportedly made clever use of our social media structure and set it against us. I am not surprised at all. In fact, it is entirely consistent with Soviet/Russian propaganda efforts for the last 100 years.

My hat's off to them. They did a good job. We probably taught them a lot of it while doing the same - at least in Putin's eyes. Things like this are necessary in order to get people to wise up but I am not sure how many will. There is a frightening number of people in America who this effort has really taken root in. I kind of see it as a form of radicalism thay is not entirely different from other radicalist movements around the world.

But, considering all the talk about biased DNC emails (the exposure of which was part of the Russian propaganda effort), I think it is a good idea to keep one's perspective.

Every election is influenced by foreign countries, OPEC countries in particular. Ever notice how US gas prices drop when an incumbent democratic president is running for reelection? Maybe it's just a coincidence, but I doubt it.

The DNC email hack is Watergate. in 1972 the DNC headquarters were broken into, the Republican/Nixon were behind it and it was a huge scandal that toppled Nixon. In 2016 the DNC headquarters were again broken into. This time by Russian hackers. They leaked a little bit every day to keep it in the news. Most were true leaks, a few may have been made up to make Clinton look worse. Although Trump was not behind it, he used this information every day to convince people that Clinton was dirty. Trump peddled Russian propaganda obtained through illegal hacking. I notice he didnt voluntarily release Lewandowski or Bannon's email file to the media. Fair is fair.

gas went from $2.36 to $3.50 when jimmy carter ran for reelection.

Can you find an avatar of Will Ferrel looking dumb? It would be fitting.

And conservatives are silent.

Could you imagine the outrage from the right had Russia tried tossing the election to Obama or Clinton?

Barely. It would be deafening. They used the most ridiculous "evidence" to concoct bullshit stories about Obama being Muslim, Obama being foreign, Hillary being in the pocket of foreign enemies, etc., yet they ignore the very real evidence of Russian activities. No, they embraced a lot of them actually. Reagan would be so proud.

I was looking for a Corey Lewandowski thread and found this instead.

It looks like Lewandowski is about to be the first person under the new impeachment investigation rules to be asked about Trump asking him to tell Sessions to lean on the Mueller investigation.

The first hearing scheduled under the new impeachment rules is with onetime Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski on Sept. 17. Lewandowski was frequently mentioned in special counsel Robert Mueller’s report , which the committee has been investigating. According to Mueller’s report, Trump asked Lewandowski to deliver a message to then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions requesting that he limit Mueller’s inquiry.

In addition to Mueller, the committee is investigating the spending of taxpayer money at the president’s hotels and properties and hush money payments Trump made to kill potentially embarrassing stories. Nadler said all of those investigations will inform the decision on whether to vote on articles of impeachment.

It's called treasonous and sedulous behavior and will be dealt with as such, defenses will be erected, both cyber and social and a lot of folks ain't gonna like the social solutions at all. Racism is a national security threat both as foreign threat and a wellspring of terrorism and strife, most sensible folks realize this or will when it is explained.
