Cloning with nothing but an airstone and a bucket of water

I'm doing a little experiment just for fun to compare cloning in an aerocloner to cloning with nothing but a bucket of water with some air-stones in it. I have had clones sprout roots in nothing but a cup of fresh RO water that I change every day, so I don't see why this wouldn't work.

I may add a minor amount of nutrient solution just to bring the ppm to about 100. Debated adding clonex to one bucket, and do a control one without it, just to see if there is any significant difference (haven't needed clonex for a long time).

I will put each cutting in a neoprene disk and place it on the water...they just float around like lily pads.

Curious if anyone clones this way or has tried this?

Will let you know the results.

I've been doing this in a 10 x 20 with floating rapid rooter deal. Thinking the depth of a 5 gallon would be key.

Isn't that a bubble cloner :). Except for the floaters :).

Yes I believe that is what it's called. I think at the time I wrote this post I didn't know that haha! :)

My experiment did not succeed. The clones never rooted and I got bacterial and fungal blooms each time. I think I did it a total of 3x in slightly different ways using hydrogen peroxide in one version, beneficial bacteria and fungus in another and just plain RO water in another. For some reason the result was the same each time. I just couldn't get roots and prevent infection. I had 4 air stones in a relatively small, light tight bin, but it didn't seem to matter.

So sadly I abandoned my experiment and went back to my aero-cloner which has always produced great results.

Do not let my experimental failure dissuade you though if you want to try a bubble cloner...you might find that it works for you!
I'm a big fan of experimenting and trying things just for the sake of trying them (always with a purpose though).

ya you can't submerge cuttings ( at least til they have decent roots). Kills em off. They need mist.

Nothing wrong with trying ;). I have a aero cloner all ready to go but never tried as I'm getting great results with cubes but hear lots of great stuff about them :). I also hear a bit of bleach works well. I use hydroguard in my res and love it. I have a 5 gallon jug of H2O2 35% but only use it for cleaning now.

Yeah where DID you get that much? You stumbled on a hidden treasure!

I love the aero-cloner, never done cubes but that's because I go media-less from start to finish...no hydroton, no soil, no perlite, no nothing; Just pure roots suspended by net cups and a neoprene disc. Aero cloners are a bit expensive but you can build your own for a fraction of the cost if you are looking for an activity on a rainy day.

I have the manifold built for one in the tray just never tried it. I found the peroxide on Kijiji for $100 :)

NO

I read a post where dude just used water and a bubbler. Nothing else. I tested it out on a kali mist and got roots in 10 days. Once you put the clone is soil it will be sun tender for a few days. Here are two White Nightmare been in the bubbler 24 hrs. No mist, no covering, i'm in no rush.

YAY for learning and experimenting! AND learning some more.

I've heard of sourcing H2O2 in lg quantities from beauty salons, or the shops that sell to them, and (I can't recall which) other such businesses. Never needed that much so I'm not sure.

Have you ever heard of/tried Air Layering? Used a lot in other woody plant propagation... not efficient for large qtys (I don't think anyway), but interesting.

done it lots back in the day. And no hair salons use a different product, it has additives and not even close to 35%, it'd burn the hair right off ya lol.

Well it sounded like you were saying it would kill them, not that aero is better, thanks for clarifying.
Bubble clones I'm familitary with don't submerge the cutting in oxygenated water as much as they suspend them above the bubbling in an aerated misty environment.

I didn't hear about the additive... but I'm slightly dubious? Like I said, I don't have personal experience with it, just what I read (I'll try to find where). I'm dubious because I have some experience with similar things: blueberries: some people use sulfuric or phosphoric acid to acidify their blueberries soil, and while you can use something like PH down (which uses the same thing, diluted) you can also source commercial stuff and dilute it yourself, without worry of contaminants. DEPENDING on exactly what alternate use it has, which defines how pure or impure it's allowed to be.

Which was my other point. Yeah, the stuff is more powerful, but you dilute it yourself. Bulk savings baby, bulk.
