My advice is smart pots. If you don't bury the plant, it's movable. That way if the sun isn't hitting it just right, the plant can be moved and no worries of drainage problems and so forth. BTW I'm in your region

You will kill it with 200 or so gallon smart pots as opposed to going in the ground. Btw I grew up in the hills there before moving to the Bay Area. I hope u keep a journal. I'm interested in seeing some Appalachian grows again
