I was about to dismiss the idea of bokashi, then my wife started talking about fermented chicken feed for our chickens. I started reading it, and it is very close to bokashi, how can I keep ignoring it now. For chicken feed, it will double the amount of food and it will be better for them also! I have about 20 chickens now and one is starting to act sick and coughing, that is how we stumbled upon fermented chicken feed. I only started reading about it last night. @Grandpa GreenJeans led me to a good website! This is an open thread, anything related if fine with me!!! Hell, I am talking about chicken feed!

Sorry to be slightly off topic..but is your chicken ok? I never thought about them getting sick, breaks my heart.

Do chickens play around with other chickens? Id love to see a picture of a baby chick if you dont mind.

I didnt like the black chicks at first, but they def have more personality to them! Scrappy as hell, they are 1/2 the size of the other chicks, but they run the place!

It was an adult chicken that is sick, wife said that it could be worms? I didnt think that they got worms, I thought that they ate them lol. We have medicine today...

If you dont mind, post an update when the time comes. I am interested in the outcome, look into using Diameticous Earth. I bet you obviously have plenty on hand but I nust recall my girlfriend talking about how it helps cats when they have a certain sickness.

It is the same worm medicine that my dogs take, Ivermectin. I already had some on hand but the wife got some more at tractor supply. The hen will not let me catch her until dark.

The worms come from eating slugs, snails, or earthworms!

if you use that in your chickens, remember to NOT use the chicken shit in your wormbin...

very different things, the EWC topdressed adds humus, microbial life and negligible amounts of NPK, the bokashi isn't anything more than basicly a fancy microbial tea to accelerate composting/nutrient cycling
BOTH awesome, but they do different things.
think of bokashi as a AACT for your compost.

I used that same tutorial to make my lacto b. Once you have the middle part separated it smells like a cheesy vinegarette (not appetizing) you can mix it with water at different ratios and use it for almost anything. It's used as a digestive aid for humans, chickens and many other animals, drain unclogger, compost starter, it helps break down roots faster after chop time, kills some insect larvae, makes nutrients in the soil more bio-available, kills mold, etc.

The list could literally fit in a book!

You pointed out that I do not have enough compost in my soil. Would Bokashi/EWC suffice until my compost is ready?

I almost missed this, wife said that we cannot eat the eggs for a little while also! We can still hatch them though.

Same result at the end of the day, so I stopped the Bokashi. But the worms loved it

So, you can use Bokashi to start a new worm bin? I made several trays last night and I imagine that it will take a month or two for it to be ready. I imagine that Bokashi will help it go faster then?

Bokashi is faster IMHO, yes. And it's cool as hell. And the worms love it (but it's acidic, so place the Bokashi on one side so they can go up to it when less acidic).
