Clinton vows to raise taxes, reform Wall Street in effort to recapture progressive base

NOW PLAYING
Hillary Clinton outlines economic agenda in speech

Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton on Monday took a giant step toward letting Democratic voters know she’s representing the progressive agenda, calling for tax increases and more regulation on Wall Street -- while making a play for a liberal base that has been gravitating toward Sen. Bernie Sanders.

“I know as much as anybody, the role Wall Street should play for main street,” said Clinton, who vowed, if elected, to “rein in excessive risks” and appoint regulators to “prosecute firms and individuals” who break the law.

Clinton also vowed to increase taxes on large corporations and the country’s highest wage-earners, an apparent effort to recapture her party’s progressive base now captivated by surging primary challenger Sanders and the reformer agenda of Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who is not a 2016 candidate.

Clinton specifically vowed to revive efforts to institute the so-called Buffet Rule, which is essentially a 30 percent “millionaire tax.”

“Those at the top have to pay their share,” Clinton said during her roughly 35-minute speech at the New School, a New York City college and bastion for progressive ideals. “Wealthy financiers pay artificially low tax rates.”

Clinton also called for minimum-wage increases and urged companies to expand profit-sharing of corporate earnings with workers.

More on this...
“Hard-working Americans deserve to benefit from the record corporate earnings they helped produce," she said. "That will be good for workers and good for business. Studies show profit-sharing that gives everyone a stake in a company's success can boost productivity and put money directly into employees' pockets."

The speech was greeted warmly on the left.

“Clinton's economic policy speech reflects a very clear understanding that the Democratic Party and the vast majority of the American people want a president who will fight alongside … Warren and refuse to kowtow to wealthy and powerful interests on Wall Street,” said Jim Dean, chairman of Democracy for America. "Coupled with Senator Bernie Sanders' early 2016 surge, today's speech illustrates the dominate force the Elizabeth Warren wing is in the Democratic Party and the critical role it has already played in ensuring that income inequality sits at the very center of the 2016 presidential debate."

While top-tier Republican candidate and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has called for an annual growth rate of 4 percent, Clinton asserted that the nation's economy should not be “tethered” to a specific growth figure but rather by how much income increases for middle-class households.

Clinton also pointed to economic progress during her husband's two terms in the 1990s and more recently under President Obama.

In Clinton's approach to the economy, she says more Americans would share in the prosperity and avoid the boom-and-bust cycles of Wall Street that have led to economic turbulence of the past decade.

Clinton, who is seeking to become the nation's first female president, also addressed ways of making it easier for women to join the workforce -- including affordable child care and pay equal to their male counterparts

Fox News is the most trusted national TV news network, a poll released Monday found.

Quinnipiac University asked 1,286 registered voters nationwide, “Whose news coverage do you trust the most?” and offered six choices.

Fox News came out on top with 29 percent.

CNN was second with 22 percent, followed by NBC News and CBS News, each at 10 percent, and ABC News with 8 percent.

MSNBC was last, garnering 7 percent.

Fox News beat the competition thanks to overwhelming support from Republican viewers, with 58 percent selecting the network as the most trusted.

CNN was the favorite station of Democrats, with 32 percent saying they trusted it more than any other national outlet. Only 3 percent of Democrats selected Fox.

The poll also found that viewers’ trust of network news has eroded sharply since CBS’s Walter Cronkite ruled the airwaves between 1962 and 1981.

When voters were asked if the information they get from network-TV news is more or less trustworthy than it was in Cronkite’s day, 48 percent said it was less reliable and only 7 percent said more reliable. Thirty-five percent said it was “about as trustworthy.”

IRS Employees Erased 422 Backup Tapes Containing 24,000 of Lois Lerner’s Emails

Investigators at the Internal Revenue Service are looking to agency employees as the reason thousands of emails from former IRS official Lois Lerner were lost, and the agency’s watchdog said today their actions were a mistake.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) J. Russell George testified before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and told lawmakers IRS employees erased 422 backup tapes that housed 24,000 emails sent to and from Lerner.

Employees erased the contents of the tapes just a month after IRS officials were told that thousands of Lerner’s emails were missing because of a hard drive crash.

In his testimony, George said he “did not uncover evidence that the erasure was done in furtherance of an effort to destroy evidence or conceal information from Congress and/or law enforcement.”

Additionally, the IRS watchdog noted that it’s likely the employees didn’t know about a 2013 directive instructing them not to destroy such email backup tapes during the investigation.

Despite George’s assurances, Hans von Spakovsky, senior legal fellow at The Heritage Foundation, told The Daily Signal the findings are troubling.

“Neither the IRS nor the Justice Department, which has supposedly been investigating the IRS targeting of conservative organizations, would tolerate the destruction of over 400 backup tapes and 24,000 emails,” he said. “They would be in court trying to have an individual American or a business charged with destruction of evidence.”

“This is particularly egregious because it happened after the IRS had received a subpoena and a protective order prohibiting the destruction of the emails,” von Spakovsky continued. “I also have a hard time believing that IRS officials did not know this was wrong—everyone in the agency knew about the Lerner scandal and the investigation.”

Investigation into Lerner’s emails began after George released an audit two years ago detailing IRS agents’ heavy scrutiny of applications from tea party and conservative groups filing for tax-exempt status.

Lerner was head of the division overseeing tax-exempt organizations during the time the groups were targeted. She retired from the tax agency in 2013.

Last year, the IRS told Congress that Lerner’s hard drive had crashed in 2011, resulting in the loss of thousands of emails sent during the same time period the groups were singled out.

Since then, the IRS has been able to produce 78,000 emails from Lerner that were originally discovered missing.

New Documents Implicate Justice Department in IRS Conservative-Targeting Scandal

Hans von Spakovsky is an authority on a wide range of issues—including civil rights, civil justice, the First Amendment, immigration, the rule of law and government reform—as a senior legal fellow in The Heritage Foundation’s Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies and manager of the think tank’s Election Law Reform Initiative. Read his research.

Rachel S. Landsman is a member of the Young Leaders Program at The Heritage Foundation.

Obama’s Department of Justice may have been involved in the IRS scheme to target conservative non-profit organizations, according to newly-released documents obtained by Judicial Watch under the Freedom of Information Act.

The documents reveal that Lois Lerner met with attorneys from the Public Integrity Section (including its chief) of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and a representative from the FBI in 2010 to discuss using campaign-finance laws to bring criminal charges against conservative non-profit organizations.

A memo prepared by Siri Buller, a tax law specialist who worked for Lerner, summarizing the meeting talks about the possibility of “a three-way partnership among the DOJ [Department of Justice], the FEC [Federal Election Commission], and the IRS” to “prevent prohibited activity by these [conservative] organizations.” Of course, the problem is that the activities that Lerner thought were “prohibited,” like expressing opinions about Obamacare, were not prohibited.

Emails between Justice Department and IRS employees also expose an attempt by the Justice Department to obtain unredacted versions of the documents IRS employees provided to Congress. One July 2013 email from a Justice Department employee to a lawyer for the IRS (the names have been redacted) says “If any of your clients have documents they are providing to Congress that you can (or would like to) provide to us before their testimony … we would like the unredacted documents.” It goes further, stating “I just know that some employees have assembled their own set [of documents], in which instance it is helpful to obtain them.”

Emails between IRS officials confirm that the IRS transmitted 21 disks containing 1.25 million pages of highly confidential tax information to the FBI. These pages included information from 2007-2010 regarding 113,000 tax returns of non-profit organizations.

The House Committee of Oversight and Government Reform was “astonished to learn…that these 21 disks contained confidential taxpayer information protected by federal law” that could not lawfully be turned over to the FBI without meeting very specific requirements for opening a criminal investigation of a particular taxpayer as outlined in 26 U.S.C. §6103. Those requirements were clearly not met by the FBI.

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton notes “[t]hese new documents show that the Obama IRS scandal is also an Obama DOJ and FBI scandal … The FBI and Justice Department worked with Lois Lerner and the IRS to concoct some reason to put President Obama’s opponents in jail before his reelection. And this abuse resulted in the FBI’s illegally obtaining confidential taxpayer information.”

Not only did Lerner have friends in the Justice Department, it also seems she had allies in Wisconsin, where conservative non-profit groups were similarlytargeted in a secret “John Doe” investigation for publicly supporting Gov. Scott Walker’s union reforms.

Recently obtained emails show that Lerner was in contact with Kevin Kennedy, director of the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board, who was one of the government officials behind the investigations of conservative organizations in Wisconsin such as the League of American Voters, Wisconsin Family Action, Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce and several others. Those emails show them “sharing articles on topics including greater donor disclosure,” which, as The Wall Street Journal points out, is significant “because those were the years when the IRS increased in harassment of conservative groups and Wisconsin prosecutors gathered information” that led to the John Doe “Star Chamber.”

Wisconsin Watchdog describes the state’s John Doe procedure as “a grand jury investigation, without a jury.” These investigations allowed law enforcement to conduct abusive, paramilitary-type raids on the leaders of a number of nonprofits and their families, most of which were conducted before dawn.

In one case, a 16-year-old boy was home alone very early one morning when armed law enforcement officers raided his home as if they were closing in on a dangerous drug cartel or mob operation. Though he was terrified, the officers would not allow him to call his parents.

Several other victims of these nighttime raids came forward, even though they were ordered not to speak about the investigations. The targets of these raids were not criminals—they were Wisconsin conservatives who had supported Act 10, the “Wisconsin Budget Repair Bill,” and whose reputations and livelihoods have been severely damaged as a result of these unwarranted, heavy-handed raids.

In January, a judge blocked subpoenas against the conservative targets of the John Doe investigations. In May, U.S. District Court Judge Rudolph Randaordered that the investigations be shut down in their entirety because it was “unlawful” for the state to “target the plaintiffs for engaging in vigorous advocacy.”

These recent revelations suggest that the targeting of conservative non-profit organizations was a scheme that went far beyond the IRS and Lois Lerner alone. It was an effort that involved the coordination of several Obama administration executive agencies and supposedly non-partisan public servants.

With the discovery of the connection to the seemingly-unjustified, retaliatory investigations in Wisconsin, it seems Lerner’s efforts even extended beyond the federal government and into at least one state, threatening conservatives and chilling conservative speech at both the federal and state level.

Nitro could you please go back to talking about fishing.
Had a chance to do some deep sea fishing in the Caribbean. Caught nothing but mackerel and whiting, was hoping to land some tuna ( bluefin). Also had a chance to do some fresh water fishing as well. There we caught mangrove snapper

HEARINGS
Planned Parenthood facing investigations over ‘abhorrent’ video on body part shipments

A shocking video showing a top Planned Parenthood official casually discussing the shipment of aborted fetus body parts to research labs is fueling calls in Washington and state capitals for investigations and hearings.

The video, shot last July, was released by the Center for Medical Progress on Tuesday. It shows two undercover CMP activists posing as employees from a biotech company having lunch with Deborah Nucatola, Planned Parenthood's senior director of medical research, and chatting about which body parts are in demand.

Calls on Capitol Hill for hearings were swift.

"Nothing is more precious than life, especially an unborn child," House Speaker John Boehner said in a statement. "When anyone diminishes an unborn child, we are all hurt, irreversibly so. When an organization monetizes an unborn child -- and with the cavalier attitude portrayed in this horrific video -- we must all act. As a start, I have asked our relevant committees to look into this matter."

Boehner also urged President Obama to "denounce, and stop, these gruesome practices."

Pro-life members of the House plan to hold a press conference Wednesday afternoon and likewise back congressional hearings on the matter. Already, the House Energy and Commerce Committee has announced an investigation.

"This video is abhorrent and rips at the heart. The committee will get to the bottom of this appalling situation," Chairman Fred Upton, R-Mich., and other committee leaders said in a statement.

And in Louisiana, Gov. Bobby Jindal, a presidential candidate, announced he was ordering an investigation as well as calling for a suspension of the group's license in the near-term.

It is illegal to sell fetus body parts, but Planned Parenthood maintains the discussions shown in the undercover video only pertain to donations they make to researchers, for which they say they only recoup shipping costs.

But the video threatens to reignite a debate not only over Planned Parenthood's federal funding, but also the use of fetal tissue harvested through abortions for research and a proposed 20-week abortion ban.

In the video, Nucatola is seen and heard discussing Planned Parenthood's policy of donating fetal tissue to researchers. The activists ask Nucatola whether clinics charge for the organs, which she skirts around.

The language is graphic.

"Yesterday was the first time she said people wanted lungs," she says. "Some people want lower extremities, too, which, that's simple. That's easy. I don't know what they're doing with it, I guess if they want muscle."

She described how they are able to get other organs without "crushing" them. "We've been very good at getting heart, lung, liver, because we know that, so I'm not gonna crush that part, I'm gonna basically crush below, I'm gonna crush above, and I'm gonna see if I can get it all intact."

The California-based citizen's group claims the nearly nine-minute video shot on July 25, 2014, is proof Planned Parenthood is breaking the law by selling aborted baby organs for possible profit.

Jindal was among several 2016 candidates who weighed in, and among five attending the Right to Life Convention in New Orleans. "If the Republican Party can't turn defending innocent human life into a winning issue nationally, we should fold up the Republican Party and start all over again," he said.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, called the video "absolutely horrifying and disgusting." As governor of Wisconsin, Walker signed off on legislation that defunded Planned Parenthood in 2011.

But the group still gets millions of dollars in federal funding, with restrictions barring the money from being used for abortions. On Capitol Hill Wednesday, protesters urged Congress to strip that money. And 2016 Republican candidate Ben Carson, in a written statement, urged the same.

But Planned Parenthood called claims they profited off abortions a "gross mischaracterization" of the organization's work.

With a patient's permission, Planned Parenthood said, clinics may sometimes donate fetal tissue for use in stem cell research, but the group added that their affiliates, which operate independently, do not profit from donations.

"There is no financial benefit for tissue donation for either the patient or for Planned Parenthood," Eric Ferrero, the organization's vice president of communications, said in a written statement. "In some instances, actual costs, such as the cost to transport tissue to leading research centers, are reimbursed which is standard across the medical field."

Critics say the leaked video suggests otherwise.

"It is stomach-churning to hear a top doctor for the national Planned Parenthood organization admit, on videotape, that Planned Parenthood abortionists can and will alter late abortion procedures to facilitate the harvesting of intact baby body parts - she specifically mentioned hearts, lungs, livers, even intact heads -- in order to fill specific pre-orders," National Right to Life President Carol Tobias told FoxNews.com. "Numerous statements by Dr. Nucatola cry out for probes by Congress and other investigatory agencies -- and quickly."

In a separate statement released Wednesday afternoon following calls for an investigation, Ferrero said, "These outrageous claims are flat-out untrue, but that doesn't matter to politicians with a longstanding political agenda to ban abortion and defund Planned Parenthood."
