Hollow stems seen as a positive in Marijuana?

Hollowed stems are a desirable trait imho. a cylinder can support more weight than a solid object: think physics class. my .02

One concern would be topping it and having disease/pests use the area as a vector. Have never seen this nor heard of it. perhaps a hollow stemmed plant is telling us not to 'attack' ie. fim, lst, etc., other than to clone. Personally, i find no difference between seed and clone, meaning if seeds were available at a reasonable price and were consistently of good quality i could happily grow from seed until i'm composted. Perhaps i should pollinate a landrace down the road and do just that. Germinate, 12/12, 7 ft african beastettes. Seems kinda simple. Forgive me, I'm getting old and my mind wanders. Just a thought.

That actually sounds like a good idea if you actually do it.
I just hate clones too much, I cloned over 30 this month alone (Most from my Sativa who wont stop growing)
Only 10 made it, the rest I trashed.
Now I'm trying another set from my Trainwreck which I realllllllyyy want to clone because I'm loving the way she grows, it's been 4 days no sign of roots, the most I'll wait is 10.
I just don't have patience, I always grow from seed and those babies germinate within 24 hours every time.

Here it is, an update to my favorite plant in the jungle (Tent)

So people thought I was kidding or just trolling, but look.
These pictures show how hollow stems affect the plant.

Remember, that plant has 4 colas, and only 2 are hollow stemmed, and it caused a bunch of positive effects on the plant itself.

Here is a picture showing how hollow the stem is, the stem is bigger than normal, and has a slit right through where you can clearly see right through it, its straight hollow. You couldn't do this to a normal plant, the plant has been like this since I cropped it 2 weeks ago, it never healed the wound fully, but the more I supercrop the wider the stem gets, and the more hollow it gets.

Now here is where things get interesting.
When I first started this thread, it was just because of the hollow stem, but the plant turned to be a polypoid? or Triploid? Has 3-4 nodes per intersection, varies from node to node.
It didn't stop there though, last night my plant TOPPED ITSELF. Yes, with no human play involved, one of the two hollow stems topped itself completely, and no I did not cut it.

Too bad I suck at cloning and have no interest of making it a mother at this time, or it would have been quite the nice yielding the plant.
very interesting. very nice. appreciate the pics and post. hmm...perhaps i am dismissive of certain techniques...prolly because 9 out of 10 newbs on riu seem to rush to 'attack' without bothering to learn simple things like reading a plant, learning raw salts (saves tons of $ and plants are green from start to finish), understanding integrated pest mngmt, etc

In appreciation of your sharing, here's a tip from al b fuct's thread: 1.5x1.5 rockwool weighs 5g dry and should only weigh 20-25g wet. Anymore and their are problems with the medium being too wet. Also, thicker stems are faster think 5mm to 8mm or 1/4"-5/16". This revolutionized my clonig results: went from 30-60\% up to 80-100% consistently. Oh, also they seem to like 26-30 celsius as an ambient..

Don't mean to be preachy just sharing the love.

O recemt;y tried an experiment. I shocked some clones, i know i'm old and absentminded, and i said to myself "hmmm they don't look very happy, i will give the dry cube just a touch of water and that's it" . oh, i gave them 5 more days. they were nearly 2 weeks old (outside limit for stored energy i believe). Ignored them. Went back....roots had exploded and wool was near bone dry. I wanted to preserve those genetics and used a drastic measure to do it. do not try this at home then come screaming at me, please. I'm, sharing this because i tried it as a last resort and it may help someone in a tough spot.
hope this is helpful. ps they now are reading to explode under 1kw mh and i'm quite pleased. again, i recommend this as a last resort: use with caution

My clones never go yellow unless I want them to, most people don't realize you can make the smallest ratio of nutrient mix for a foliar spray. I take a little clumped up ball of nutrients from jacks classic 20-20-20 put it into a 1lt mist bottle and spray and they never go yellow. Just gotta feed them when they get hungry. I've had a few clones go yellow but only because I stopped misting them or caring and let them dry out in the sun. It's pretty cold here right now god is playing tricks on us in my area, one day its hot, one day its freezing, one day my grow area is up to 90% humidity before of rain another its under 16%. If anything I may just take a bunch of clones right before I put into flower, and hope they make it so when I'm done flowering my babies I have clones to start up. Maybe I'll just put the clones in the fridge or freezer I heard that works too.

I've never had the yellowing problem too bad in clones. Also, I charge wool with 1/4 strength food so when the roots come out it goes. the fridge thing works for a time, not sure have never done it, i would imagine it puts them in 'stasis'

very happy to hear you've found a good food i hear nothing but good stuff about jacks/jr. i use raw salts because it's easy, cheap, available and good quality food.

Cheers cif, if ya ever want to hang and shoot the breeze pm me. you're a smart guy and i've enjoyed getting to know you. I promise not to be too intense. forgive the elderly, our minds wander

in elementary the teacher asked the kids to squeeze the egg as hard as we could, nobody could break it. awesome...different though, I wish weed was unbendable

Lol I take it someone failed their physics class?
that thin wall easily buckles
not from what i have seent. I have a cut i just saved and i have to use incredible force that i've never had to with any other plant to take an 8mm clone. they are never clean cuts and i have to re-cut them after. if it buckles it's too tender or there is a k deficiency ( i believe). that is my humble opinion but we can disagree amicably

Yea jacks has completely changed the way I look at nutrients. I had a long journey with nutrients since I was 15 trying to do a window grow.
I started with some off brand local cheap nutrients, they didn't do shit, probably some random pee in a bottle.
I moved onto Fox Farms with Fox Farm Soil. Best combo I've used soil wise, if I ever go soil again, I'll be using FF products only.
I then moved to Hydro/soilless and took on AN, I didn't like the cost too much, but what bothered me was that the plants were always yellow no matter what by harvest and I'm sure it decreased my yield because I was tending more to fix the sickness than anything.
I then tried General Hydroponics, I used it for 2 weeks then put it away lol, you get what you pay for, $15 of junk.
I was then told by many many people on here that I should use Jacks Classic, and I haven't looked back. They keep my plants green their entire lives no bullshit involved.
Although I have to be honest, I use AN & Humbolt additives when needed but they don't have HUGE NPK numbers like most additives. They are like 0-0-0.3 or 0-0-1, really light on the PPM and PH stable.

Thanks for the invitation bro, I may take you up on it one day.
No worries though, I accept everyone for who they are no matter their flaws, makes people more interesting, we can't all be robots.

Yea lol our teacher made us stand on a pack of eggs, even the fattest kids didn't break them.
The moment they fall on the floor at home though and you wonder why the fuck they won't break under your feet lol.

This is a picture of mine, it's not splitting apart but I didn't top mine and it's alot shorter.
I only topped mine when it was a newborn for 4 main colas, sadly only 2 of 4 actually have the hollow stem.
I still love it though, especially since it topped itself and is growing very bushy.

Yours looks good as well.

2 of my strains have hollow stems and 2 don't. My Blue Magoo when topped opens up a hole large enough to drop a pencil in it!! It is a very stretchy plant!! When I train that strain, as in bending it, it will split open and you can see right through it. It heals in no time and keeps growing just fine!
I noticed my short bushy strains have a very small hole if any at all.

Anyone who has worked with solid stock and tubing knows that the tubing can hold more force before bending compared to the solid stock. I tend to believe the plant's know if they need the extra strength and grow accordingly.

I don't know if anyone's already mentioned this or not, but there is a scientific article published in the 60's, in which the author studied large populations of cannabis, massive fields. He concluded that hollow stems tended to yield what he called 'hemp type' cannabis and the denser stems (particularly the ones with no hole at all) yielded what he called 'drug type' cannabis.

That being said, I have had some girls with hollow stems that turned-out wonderfully. The author of the article was studying hemp fields, not like what we are growing today. It's no cause for concern.... Unless you have beetles...

I registered just to show you guys a prime example of how hollow vs hardened makes a height/canopy difference:
Left is hollow right is hardened.

Subcool says he likes hollow stems as a trait in his genetics. I don't think I want that in my outdoor plants because I have noticed hollow stems are easier to break and would think they are susceptible to mold. Indoors don't really notice a difference.

I now have two 6 foot plants standing next to my 2 1/2 plants. So tired of jacking up the little fellows hahahahahaha.

I'd rather have a mix of both than have to work with the two extremes because it's causing me so many problems. Well, that'll teach me to grow 10 different strains at once and not care about the height genetics.
