Michigan Father Killed in Marijuana Child Removal Incident

A prosecutor in northern Michigan has cleared the police officer who shot and killed a Grayling man as police and Child Protective Services (CPS) employees attempted to seize his three-year-old. The attempted removal of the minor child came after a police officer who came to the scene on a call earlier that same day reported that he smelled marijuana and reported the incident to CPS authorities, who decided the child needed to be removed. The dead man, William Reddie, 32, becomes the 17th person killed in US domestic drug law enforcement operations so far this year.
[Editor's Note: This case illustrates the difficulties that arise in determining which deaths qualify as being a direct result of drug law enforcement. Police here were enforcing child protections laws, not drug laws, but the only reason CPS was called in was because of the allegation of marijuana use. There was no allegation of crazed behavior due to marijuana use; only the allegation of use. For Michigan CPS authorities, that was enough to remove the child. Bottom line: This guy died because the state tried to take his kid because he was accused of smoking pot, so he merits inclusion. That doesn't mean his own actions didn't contribute to his death.]
Reddie’s killing took place on February 3, but we only became aware of it when news broke this week that prosecutors had decided that the police officer’s use of deadly force in the incident was justified.....

Shit like this pisses me off to no end, who does somebody think they are to take away a kid based on an accusation you may have smoked pot, now he's dead and the kid has no father and the guy didn't even smoke

What a sad story, however, I doubt marijuana has much to do with why the child was removed. First there was a Domestic Violence complaint. Who the DV was with is not listed but someone called the police and someone told them he was smoking MJ in front of his child (the in front of is the biggie here). For some reason no one was arrested for the DV but a cop says he smells marijuana and no search is done. Why did he not investigate the smell and investigate the criminal presence of marijuana. There was the smell of marijuana, reported DV and a child present and someone else (who should be suspected of marijuana use). This Cop left a child in a potentially dangerous situation or he did search and fond nothing. None of this adds up.
Having worked in child protection the more likely scenario more like a cop who shows up at a DV scene. No one is cooperating (no arrest). This pisses the cop off. He sees court dates for custody battles. More than likely he saw that CPS was already involved with the custody issue filled a report. Now where he may not have had evidence to criminally charge him his word is enough to have that child removed especially if there was an already open case. There lots of shit going on here.

Now pulling a knife? You just can't do that. Sad thing is I can see myself lashing to try anything to stop someone from taking my children.

Now here's the clincher. Either the cop lied altogether about smelling pot or someone else was smoking and they assume its this guy and the shit unfolds.

Historically, arguing with a person that has a gun has been proven to be a seriously bad idea.

I can understand standing up for your rights, but getting shot in the process is the Worst way to get your point cross.

when police and CPS workers arrived to seize the child, Reddie then reportedly displayed a pocketknife and lunged at them
That's taken from the article, dumb fuck left his kid fatherless because of his stupid actions. You'd think at 32 you would have a little bit more sense.
