We always had to empty our back pockets as well.
The Mississippi public school system was rough on a rebellious young man's backside.
Ha, the paddle must have been a southern US thing. We got the strap, or just a plain old ruler, those 3 footers that stung like a bitch. Ah, the good old days - NOT...
Although, the pendulum has swung way too far the other way these days, my grandson could use the strap the odd time, of course his parents would get charged with child abuse and I'd end up having to raise them, on second thought, let's keep things the way they are - lmao

Saw many changes in life good and bad
Assanations, civil rights marches, segregation, desegregation, moon landings, air conditioning
Saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan ,watched television when there were only 3 channels ,playing outside so long when it was time to come in you had those rings of dirt around your neck . when it came time to settle differences we did it with our fists no guns needed...... working after school making $1.80 per hour gas was .32¢ /gal.and one more thing I never saw my buddys underwear unless we had PE together.......don't get the sagging thing........but I wouldn't trade my childhood for anything now but when I was living it I always thought there was something better..........I don't think there was !!!!
I don't think my generation is any better than anyone else's we had different problems we dealt with that aren't problems in these times....I do think that it is harder being a kid these days than I'm my generation and I think life now is also more difficult........just an old mans point of view ........now pull your pants up buy a belt and quit fucking up my yard !

Those 3ft rulers are called yard sticks.
I guess I'm the first year of gen Y.I don't really agree with the description though, of any of them. Seems that each generation thinks the new generation is lazy. I think they are just a bunch of haters. There is lazy people in every generation. I got to spend a lot of time with my grandfather, who was born in 1911, when I was a child. I would never want to live out the terrible stories he told me about his childhood. I feel lucky to experience a time without internet and instant access to any and everything. But I do love my smart phone.

I said "MOST", and meant "MOST"
You could say "most" about any war and any generation btw. With apporximate numbers putting baby boomers at 79 million of course 'MOST" is an easy cover. Also Canada immigration saw 20-30,000 American men come across the border during 'Nam, some estimates are up to 125,000 to dodge the draft. Atleast Ali had the balls to serve time instead of run away.

So what does the "D" stand for anyway? In today's terms in means Dick, and so I think you are in violation of TOS. Obviously it's not dentures because some mod got their panties in a bunch about it.

Same here I was born in 59, life was much simpler then people were nicer and as you said oldtimer differences were settled with your fists on a one to one not a gang on to one. We didn't have much but we didn't need much, roof over your head a full belly and plenty of love, I remember riding a mans pushbike with no tyres on it their was a dozen kids waiting for their turn no one owned a bike of there own and the bike we rode was way to big for us and belonged to us all. We had a black and white television and we thought that was great, we had no car my dad had an old motorbike, no phone, no freezer but I wouldn't change my childhood for anything. Happy Days.

You should make friends with Uncle Buck, he's the only one I can think of whose mind would immediately think "dick" upon seeing the letter D. Out and blocked.

Tough to generalize but there are some trends I see. Heads are often down with x'ers. I think the 80's was a difficult decade to grow up in due to the level of tension at that time (Cold war and a fear of nuclear conflict). That could have been even more stressful for those who grew up in the 50's and 60's. Guess it depends on a bunch of stuff. It was nice for x'ers to have the decade end well with the fall of the Berlin Wall. I still wish I'd jumped on a plane and been part of that. BYO sledgehammer. lol

Being as objective as I can, there has been so much change in general (technologies, social, economic, two world wars, cold war, etc, etc) that the 20th century is a bit of a paradox; higher standards of living (developed countries) but less peace of mind (media brought the world's problems right into our living room). I think there may have been more change in the last 100 than the last 1000 years. No wonder people are stressed out.

Great thread topic btw.

I was born in 57 and well remember the futile "Drop and Cover" drills in elementary school.

It would mean your final act would be immortalized in the shadow on some sidewalk.
1: Curled up in the fetal position.
2: Running like a maniac thinking you could get far enough away.

Both Suck !

When I was in grade school we still had fallout shelters. After talking to my father and his same experiences as you with the duck and cover I always wondered why they didn't send everyone down to the shelters instead of under the desks.
