I know what you're saying kona. I'm not saying I can germinate a pack of seeds, chose a random male and female and start chucking pollen. Locking down a good male will require pollinating some females and growing out the resulting seeds to see if there is even some potential there ..... but to me it seems like every breeder has one male that they hit every clone only under the sun with and sell the F1's. Not a whole lot of "breeding" or stability going on there IMO. Even the better breeders do this. Bodhi has been using two males (Appy and SL) to knock up every cut floating around for how long now? Gage Green has pollinated every cut under the sun with Joseph OG and sells the seeds for $120 a pack. It just doesn't seem like any breeders are truly working lines and stabilizing them. I've smoked/grown a few home made creations now and I have been blown away with how good they are. These didn't come from sophisticated breeding programs. Just a grower like you and I doing it in their basement. I've got 300+ seeds sitting in my vault and a garden full of nice females ...... so why can't I anticipate similar results?
I don't really consider the people out there as breeders. No offense to Bodhi or fans, sounds like a great guy. And he does actually get into some breeding. But mainly it a cross and sell game out there.
What I mean is, cross a great male cutting with other female cuttings and sell the offspring. Or, more commonly, cross a great clone with every male.
This is part of the breeding process, don't get me wrong, but a small facet in a much larger world of creation.
All you are doing is crossing known clone genetics. This greatly limits the gene pool. And also limits to previous selection possibly based on greed, yield and bag appeal, or crystal production, bud density......
So to create and breed, there is much about selection. Not just large numbers, but finer qualities that the masses don't look at. Like a master taster for a winery, or grape grower for that matter. Sure many people can smell wine, but only a few can detect the subtleties of the bouquet. As the growers and breeders of the finest vineyards, there is many things that one studies and pays attention to, and has a certain ability to pick and choose and combine through knowledge and skill, that makes them the best at what they do.
That said, and i'm not claiming to be a master, this shouldn't discourage you. Cause until you try, you will never know if you were born with such a gift.
So I hope you turn out to be a great breeder, and can restore some much needed genetics, back into the gene pool. But if not, I wish you all the best in your quest, and know at the very least it will be a fun learning experience.
