How long does the test take to do? Been waiting lol
getting there ... lol i had a few mishapps but I am just about to spray the TLC ... hehe I think it will take me a few runs to dial it in!! I broke my capillary tube tool ... I had never worked with capillary tubes and I think I will have to go buy another one tomorrow to run the test again ... I had to almost eye ball the 1 microliter drop so anyway ... I ll see what it looks like and take pics of the TLC in about 15 minutes ... takes longer than I thought for the developing solution to move up... been 20 minutes now almost there

OK!!!
First thing I have to say is that even though it didnt turn out like it should be, I am pretty stocked about this whole thing and I know I will be able to make it happen properly in the near future. First things first, the rookie fuck up:

I had never worked with a capillary tube and I didnt really know how to get it in its compartment and for some stupid reason I thought the glass tube had to go through the rubber part. So I will have to replace this part and get someone to show me how it actually works. For this reason I had to eyeball the amount I placed on the plates and from my results I feel like I probably didnt place enough solution on the TLC
IMG_5436.jpg

This is how I got the kit in the mail, everything was VERY WELL packaged:
IMG_5419.jpgIMG_5420.jpgIMG_5421.jpg

Also my scale were not accurate enough and I am really not sure how close to .1 gram I was in each samples.
IMG_5425.jpg

One thing I was happy with this time is the step 3 from the Montana Biotech video was already done, the holes were not well spaced but they were already in the plates so I now understand what needs to be done for this step. You will see later on the plates that there is 5 premade holes but I was only planning on running 4 samples per plate for my first run.

So I made a little plan of each plates...
IMG_5423.jpg

I have not spent much time analyzing the results yet, I feel like there was not enough solution in each holes to get a strong readings of the THC and CBD if there are any. The respect and Shark should show CBD.
IMG_5431.jpgIMG_5432.jpgIMG_5432-2.jpgIMG_5432-3.jpgIMG_5432-4.jpg

Leftovers ... this will go in the garbage, rinsed and sanitized for next run...
IMG_5434.jpg

All in all I am very happy, I actually did better than anticipated lol ... I am a slow learner but when I know, I know haha. .. So now it's time for me to look at the results and analyze them, I will ask Joseph's opinion from Montana Biotech, by the way he has been very good at answering my questions on email. One thing I should say is dont over think it, once you have the kit, do your first 2 plates and enjoy the whole process, IT IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE!! IT IS WEED SCIENCE!! :eyesmoke:

I will wait until I harvest my Pennywise #1 before I run the next 2 plates and I might rerun my Respect and Spacegrin and SpaceChemo. I will be re-ordering a kit for sure.

There you have it folks, one of the best online review of the Montana Biotech THC CBD test kit. Well one of the best online review of any Thin Layer Chromatography kits... the Montana is the cheapest one out there and I dont know why anyone would pay more money for the same gear.

Happy Growing everyone :eyesmoke:

LOOK carefully and will see that both Respect and Shark seems to have CBD : http://montanabiotech.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/tlc-plate-pic.jpg

Another thing I would like to add is that if you look carefully, the SpaceGrin, the Respect, and the SpaceChemo all ran very similar results on each plates.

EDIT!!! I just went downstairs and it seems like I can see a little better the THC area of the TLC plates so I will take some more pics and repost a few pics, first I gotta a smoke a fatty!! WOOHHOO

****SCROLL DOWN TO POST #427 FOR THE FULL REVIEW OF THE MONTANA BIOTECH AT HOME TESTING KIT****

****it was my first time and I fucked up please read the full review before you judge the product thanks**********

So it seems like we can analyze the plates a little better 15 minutes after spraying them... I am not sure if we can actually see the CBD on any of them but we can all agree the Respect cutting seems to be the highest in cannabinoids, and surprisingly my spacechemo the lowest in all categories. I am looking forward to run the spacechemo again. I am hoping Joseph has a RIU account and can post his opinion on my first tests. I hope you guys enjoy the review.

I re-organized room2, I might have to take down spacechemo (the big one on the right) a little early coze I am almost out of weed!!

Some of my strains are quite high in CBG...

http://www.truthonpot.com/2013/08/10/is-cannabigerol-cbg-the-ultimate-cannabinoid/

Cannabigerol (CBG) is the “stem cell” for many of the chemicals in marijuana, including THC and CBD. It also has a number of medical properties that researchers are just starting to uncover.
TruthOnPot.com – Cannabigerol happens to be responsible for most of marijuana’s medical effects, but many aren’t aware that this chemical even exists. That’s because CBG works behind the scenes, which scientists have only recently started to investigate.
As it turns out, THC and CBD – the two most common chemicals in marijuana – and other minor cannabinoids all begin as CBG. CBG is non-psychoactive and can be thought of as the “stem cell” of these chemicals. CBG is quickly converted to other cannabinoids by enzymes in the cannabis plant, which explains the low concentration of CBG in most strains.

Besides its role in forming other cannabinoids, CBG has a number of important medical effects of its own. As Dr. Bonni Goldstein, Medical Director of Canna-Centers, explained in a video for WeedMaps TV, CBG inhibits the uptake of a chemical in our brain called GABA – something CBD also does.
“When GABA [uptake] is inhibited, you actually have muscle relaxation and you have anti-anxiety effects, so it appears to promote similar effects that CBD has. It also appears to have anti-depressant and some modest anti-fungal properties.”
Although CBG hasn’t been studied nearly as much as CBD, a small body of evidence suggests it has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects as well.

Earlier this year, researchers from Italy observed both of these properties in an experimental model of inflammatory bowel disease, concluding that “CBG may represent a new therapeutic opportunity” for patients with the disorder.
Other pre-clinical studies suggest more diverse uses for CBG as a COX-2 inhibitor, similar to the popular group of pharmaceuticals known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
In one study, CBG, THC and CBD all appeared to inhibit COX-2 enzymes, although higher concentrations were required compared to traditional NSAIDs. Still, NSAIDs come with a number of side effects that cannabis-based medicines do not.
More research is definitely necessary to determine CBG’s true medical potential – as well as how to utilize it effectively – but it’s good to hear that other chemicals in marijuana besides THC and CBD could be helping patients, even without their knowledge.
Not to mention – without CBG – most of these cannabinoids wouldn’t be around to begin with.

Someone sent a private message saying they were still a little confused ... this is how you interpret the results:

tlc-plate-pic.jpg

looking carefully at my own results below, I can see that sample A-BlueSage, Sample D and E -Respect, and Sample H - Shark all have a cbd kind of melting into the THC just kind of above it, I was expecting all of them except bluesage to have high cbd. My bluesage has successfully revegged and will be used for future breeding project. It will be a while before I can test her again though ... out of flowers!!

I just had a nerd gasm. Nifty stuff GS. I really need to dabble in some CBD strains.
haha thanks RedCarpet!!

I have spent a fair bit of time researching Thin Layer Chromatography for cannabis on the Internet prior to buying the kit and there is not much out there... I received a private message that really helped me interpret my results and the member did not want to have his RIU username associated with their field of work so it is anyway:

Hello GreenSanta,

I know there's no way for me to prove this without giving up who I am, I'm a published scientist with much experience in chromatography and purification. I wanted to give you a few thoughts on your results of your test and a few tips on how to improve your results.

First off, I would like to say that your first try does not look bad at all. Even though the bands are faint, you can clearly see the presence of THC and CBD in your samples. This youtube video is really good, as not only are they using the same capillary tubes as you, but the woman does a very good job of explaining how to use the capillary tubes and TLC plates which look similar to those in the kit you've bought:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CksCtGmplaM. It is for a chemistry lab of some sort, but they are even using plant matter, so that also seemed relevant.

In your sample tubes, I noticed that your ganja looks like it needs to really be chopped up as fine as possible. This part might be difficult to do without losing some of your sample...also try to get to as close to the recommended amount (0.1g) as possible. I feel that your results can be interpreted in two ways: either you did not get enough sample onto the plate, or you did not get good solubilization of your sample-either one could cause the faint bands you're seeing.

The kit looks really cool! Even though the test cannot give you an absolute amount of THC and CBD in your samples, it's neat that people can start to do at least a qualitative analysis in their own home these days:smile: If you could get a standard of known THC content, you could run that standard with your samples and at least know if your samples were higher or lower in content than the standard.

Have fun and keep up the awesome work with your grows!

Wow thank you GS, very cool stuff.. I agree with the author, no numbers- but get ahold of what you can locally, maybe even a few samples, and see what they are like against what you're running... Or to try and lock down a pure CBD/N strain... This could give you an idea of how little or much THC you still have..

i could see this being a BLAST for the GG, puff, root, etc...I may have to try it out and see how much of a lightweight I am  ha.. Riight

now about that brix meter..

I have only tried the brix meter on a couple plants so far, the brix reading were really low. I dont have enough leaves to spare right now. You guys will hear about the refractometer when I get a great reading with it hehe ... no points in telling you I scored less than 10 on my Senora Ampero before I moved her to the budding room. She is actually looking not so healthy right now hehe ... She did look very healthy when I tested a leaf. I can't wait to grow full on ROLS because since I have been re-using and re-amending my soil it has been a hit and miss...

I am waiting to find out just as much as you!! i ll chop my pennywise #1 pretty soon but she will be on the early side since i fucked up... the other one will be another few weeks for sure if not more. I will see if I re-order a THC test kit right away or not but I still have 2 plates enough for 10 samples and not sure that I will wait for the pennywise#2 to use them up.

anyway, I am waiting for pennywise#1 to be somewhat ready to run the next test so we'll see how she scores!

I am getting better at patience myself this hobby helps a lot lol.

There is 1 x 600w and 3 x 400w, to get the most out of the 600w she's in the middle and it makes it awkward to distribute the light... anyway I think the GPW will be great on this one.
