Javadog's Next Adventure

LOL, while I might be neutral, my water is gunk. I am at the
end of the water line, it seems.

One thing that I want you guys to take into consideration is that
water changes pH when exposed to water over time. I am not recalling
the exact mechanism off the top of my head, but it is due to CO2
interacting with the water. (Was it carboxylic acid? ...that would lower pH...)

The water a few hrs later went from 182 to 177 ppm just over 2.5 hrs time.

This could be ppm lowering or merely just inaccuracy of the meter?!?

Ah, lower...that fits.

Let me Google something up...

"exposure to air raising the pH of water"......yup:
Carbon Dioxide
Carbon dioxide gas dissolves easily in water, resulting in carbonic acid:
H[SUB]2[/SUB]O + CO[SUB]2[/SUB] <===> H[SUB]2[/SUB]CO[SUB]3[/SUB]
The carbonic acid increases the acidity of the water (lowers the pH)

Its widely thought that leaving your water sit for 24 hours will evaporate chlorine. So what you're seeing could, and hopefully be just that.

Do you calibrate your meter regularly? How many readings did you take each time? I always take two or three readings myself just to make sure.

Seems logical to me that it would be lower which is good :)

Yes, it is the Chloramine that will not evaporate....but I do not
think that it is as nasty.

Good morning all. Today I up-potted the newest breeds to their
first beer cup.

The next three waves are all doing well.

There is the BB's, Deep Psychosis, Engineer's Dream X Deep Blue,
Blue Pit, and Engineer's Dream. They are all at about a month.
I took pre-sexed clones of two of them. We should see sex in another
few weeks:

Then there is the next wave, that includes Jack The Ripper, NYC Diesel,
Jack's Cleaner 2, Dinachem, and Smelly Cherry:
IMG_2726.jpg

And just into their first cups are Plushberry, Ace's Purple Haze, Ace's Panama,
G13's Purple Haze, and Cheese:

I am always a bit nervous right after the first up-potting. I lost a couple to
damping off recently, but that was linked to a heat issue.

Have a great day!

I've been using pool shock to add chlorine to my res for the last 9 months or so as a steralizer, and use chlorinated water on my clones with great results.

Looks great jd. At that stage of seedlings i find it best to have a cover over them like a drinking glass or cup. Otherwise they will seem too dry, just until they have a better root system. But my humidity is pretty low too :)

Well, so is mine. A quarter mile from the ocean...but still
in a "coastal desert".

I will think about this, but I am sure that the degree to which
I buried these babies is hiding the degree to which they have
already grown roots.

They got a couple of weeks in the seed tray, and had roots to
the bottom of the jiffy puck when I up-potted them.

I am thinking about adding humidity to my efforts....this is another
reason to think that out. I even have the hygrotherm to control
the system.

Thanks for taking the time!

I took out the Lemon Thai Kush, to get at the Chemdog this morning.

I flushed with 5 gallons of plain water the Chemdog, Blue Dream, and LTK.

I can take the BD at any time, but the other two look like they need a month!

One thing that I am getting better at is both height control and larf control.

I did ok on the latter with Chemdog, but not at all on the former:

This plant looks to be making a decent yield.

The Lemon Thai Kush is admittedly a good bit smaller, but this is my first time
growing it and I am sure that I can do better. Taste is king with me, and if it
delivers the Lemons, then I will love it. :0)

Yeah...I know that my tap water will not kill my plants, or it
would have by now right? LOL

...but when I found myself topping off my compost tea barrel,
then I realized that this was just plain stupid....killing my bugs.

I will continue to use my tap when I need to, like for flushing...
...but some better answer will come along.

Thanks for taking the time.

I dont have the chemicals to calibrate, and honestly dont know what setting(s) are best?

it has completely variable conversion factor and temp coefficient %
The ranges are large, so I dont know where to set it.
A local hydro store set it for me, but I feel they are as ignorant to the settings as I am..
Bottom line I dont know if I am getting accurate readings, and this might account for my yellowing.

When I give them 400 ppm they might be getting 250ppm to 600ppm lol

Ugh...this does make it hard to make intelligent changes.

I would recommend only small changes, and isolated ones
at that, so that you can just watch the ladies to know what
works best.

Good luck,

I am reading and re-reading the instructions in hopes I will actually understand the cal and storage procedures.

Looks like me storing the meter in water is the wrong way to do it, as is storing it in the 4.01 solution I have.

Seems I did everything wrong!!

It might be worse...you did the right thing and did not know it.

i.e. I used the 4.0 on my BlueLabs pen....fucking doesn't work
any longer. I was told to use deionized water, but, as I showed
the person trying to help me, it said to use the 4.0 on the label!

Ah well, I have strips as a backup....just got to start checking.

My EC meter is stored dry, I calibrate using 1000ppm solution which I bought from the grow store for a few bucks. A bottle will last you a looooong time. Adjusting mine is done by tiny adjustments of a micro flat head screwdriver. If you've gone through as many cheap PH pens as I have you have several laying around LOL.

Nice looking gals as always JD, that girl is lanky but danky!

Interesting! What volumes are you adding? I've never heard of anyone adding chlorine to their res or to their clones. I'm assuming the doses are very small? I can't imagine small doses of chlorine would really effect plants all that much, unless you're growing 100% organically and not inoculating regularly.

I could be wrong, but I think the bigger concern with chlorinated water is with soil because it kills the microherd.

That said, I've still never heard of that and its good to know that you see no ill effects. I think the application of concentrated food grade H2o2 seems to be the norm for keeping the res sterile in hydro.

Here is from the instructions PDF:

• When not in use, rinse the electrode with water to
minimize contamination and store it with a few drops
of storage (HI 70300) or pH 7 (HI 7007) solution in
the protective cap after use. DO NOT USE DISTILLED
OR DEIONIZED WATER FOR STORAGE PURPOSES.
• If the electrode has been left dry, soak in a storage
or pH 7 solution for at least one hour to reactivate it.
• To prolong the life of the pH electrode, it is
recommended to clean it monthly by immersing it in
the HI 7061 cleaning solution for half an hour.
Afterwards, rinse it thoroughly with tap water and
recalibrate the meter

You guys are confusing the hell out of me here lol. One second we're talking ppm's then we're talking about a PH pen.

EC meter measures PPM, PH pen measures PH.

I store my EC meter dry and calibrate every few uses (don't use that often either).

I store my PH pen in alternating each use between PH 4.01 or 7.0 and calibrate every single time I use it.

JD makes the most important point.

Ugh...this does make it hard to make intelligent changes.

JD
If you don't calibrate your meters regularly, you may as well not waste your time using them lol.

Good stuff team.

I will try to revive and re-calibrate my pen.

My PPM meter is still working. If/when I try hydro
(RDWC I think) then I will have to get a handle on
taking readings consistently and accurately.
