First and foremost, Babs is no drama queen. I avoid it like the plague...if you only knew.
Secondly, I say what I mean and I mean what I say.....and I say it as a PARENT....as BOTH parents. I am Mom and Dad.
Perhaps one day you will get it.
BTW, I don't offend easily.
my mom is a mom and dad and she smokes and let me smoke when I was 16.

don't know if that influences your decision at all, she's certainly no idiot.

i started smoking with my parents when i turned 17

i remember it like it happend yesturday

they made a birthday cake with cannabutter in it

i had no idea because they didnt cook it at the house

well when i took a taste of the cake i knew something wasnt right... well it was right alright

that cake was the strongest weed tasting food ive ever eaten

i was fucked for a while off it

they told me they made 3 ounces worth of cannabutter and there was more

i made brownies and such with it and ate it for about a month

after that day ne time they were around and smoking i would get asked if i wanted some

i never refused.

firstly, everyone keeps saying "underage", just what does that mean???? 16, 18, 21, means nothing so far as i'm concerned.

as with most people, i'm all for the whole let them make the choice then join in idea, what really get's me is parents, families, that even once the kid is old emough, say 20's, will still not accept that their child smokes the dope, and will push hate on that kid for doing so.
i have that problem and i am about to turn 20 i can only HOPE that someday
they will just acept it :-(

kids will smoke, just like about 80% of us did in our early teens. My parents never knew i was tho and thats the way it should be, parents should NEVER encourage a minor to smoke weed. Thats just awful.

Poplars, let's just say that my son is not even yet the age of 12. Should the worst drug he ever encounters be MJ, I will TRULY feel blessed......and that is not the first or last time I will post this on RIU.

" parents should NEVER encourage a minor to smoke weed. Thats just awful"
---my sentiments exactly. Alas, I will be so much more in tune than my parents were.......and I simply will NOT condone the use at age 16, period, point blank. Sorry, a person is just not mature enough to make those decisons SO FREELY in their life as a teen-ager. They have yet to EVEN MAKE A LIFE for themselves........so simple.

Exactly, and we all know that at age 16 some big decisions will get made for how your future could end up and weed, unfortunately, does take away a certain amount of drive and ambition. + rep!

i think a family should not smoke together.

i think it's hard for a young mind to make proper decisions on right and wrong and although i agree smoking isn't wrong it's hard to teach a young person to follow the law except for this one that you don't agree with.

i think that the relationship between a parent and child requires sacred space and partaking of certain activities together dissolves the authority of the position of the parent.
both of my parents used drugs and i am thankful we never used together because i can always only see them as a parent in my mind, rather than a parent, and a peer.

i think an appropriate method may be to "frown" on the use, but never really proactively interfere with it? allow them to make the choices and develop their habits independently.

and then, when they reach of age, if the relationship is in an appropriate state this may turn out to be something you both love and can share.

i know this won't be popular.
when we smoke we get stoned, and the image and connotations of a stoned parent removes them from the pedestal that they need to make demands, to lead.

I think 16 yr olds can make responsible decisions. that is probably
around the time most of us started, as well as myself.

If we could make responsible decisions with weed why can't
the younger generation?

You just have to educate them about it. (not like the D.A.R.E. shit in school) and I believe they can and will handle the situation
responsibly when confronted with it. As long as they are educated
about it.

I'm with purplekitty on this one.

16 year old kids have a lot more awareness and power of decisionmaking in their situation than you may think. I started at 16 and a half, and I feel that my decision making was almost as good as it is now at 18. starting then only helped my life.

I would be severally depressed and miserable without weed.

i am completely on track with purplekitty and poplars. education, as purplekitty mentioned, specifically from the parent (in this case any parent who smokes/smoked weed) is the single most important thing for a person of any age to make a responsible decision.
this is how i was raised, and i think my mother is wonderful and i will definitely take many tips from her when i am a parent.

Yes and yes. My kids kbow who's got the best weed. Its either let them go out on the street and learn about it which in turn could mean them getting ripped off or even killed. I make my kids go through me purely for the safety factor. Until they were 18 it was their allowence. They got a quarter a week for keeping the house clean but now its the safety my daughter is beautiful. She models for sears catalog so u can imagine me as a father as it is... My baby girl is not goin into the streets to buy from shady thugs and gettin beat up or worse in alleys... Not only do I condone it I would enforce it lol. And in reguard to the second post I couldn't agree more. We are possibly the closest family I know of because of this. Love weed like it loves u

I first smoked at 13 and was an official pothead at 16. My first class I was to report to in HS was Spanish--9th grade. I SLEPT. The bell rang and I went on to Typing ---yes, I'm that old. Guess what? I slept in that class too.
On to Science.......groggy and beginning to wake up.
Note, I made all A's on my tests. As for class participation.......failed miserably. Turning in HW assignements??? Pfft....I think not. Night time came along and I read and learned...sure, but when it came time to show it overall with the grade.......I FAILED.
Is this what you want for your child?.......excuse me, teenager?
Sorry, but there is a time for all things.....HS is not the time for "freedom to the hilt." It is an absolute imperative that one finds their place in life PRIOR to partaking in the "later joy found therein of."

Hopefully, a 16 year-old can make the "responsible decision" to not get in the car with the buddy they came to the party with that just took several beer bongs in a row--after taking several shots of Jack Daniels......"hopefully."
When real life "confronts" them---HOPEFULLY---they will be equipped to make proper/righteous choices regarding life in general. Alas, the building blocks one must ascertain in order that they are capable of doing so, come only from the will to FIRST--and FOREMOST--adhere to a lifestyle of absolute discipline.
I realize that teens in this day and age have more to overcome......"yet"---that is only MORE the reason to FOCUS. :peace:

that was at 13. of course you weren't responsible enough.

I was having sex at 17. But under no circumstances was I stupid.
Birth control and condoms for me. And babies for everyone else

too stupid to think about the consequences. Now that I think of it,
more than half of the people who I went to school with have a baby,
or babies. which i think is very sad.

All I had to do was look at the people around me and I learned from
their mistakes. Because I knew I didn't ever want to end up like that.

I was very responsible at 16. But I guess I can't say the same for all teens.
But I do think at that age, most are able to make responsible decisions.
Just my opinion because if I did it, why can't anyone else?

I didn't grow up being educated about weed or sex, I had to educate
myself. But maybe thats why I made responsible decisions.

babs, we get it. you are wise much, much beyond the likes of us, and it is absolutely imperative that we understand never to let our children.... no wait, never to let our teenagers be curious about the world they live in. most people don't know "their place in life" by the time they reach adulthood (let's go with 21 Earth years). it takes MANY different experiences for people to find what they are truly comfortable with. for some, finding a new way to look at the world is an absolute imperative in their search for "their place." do you think people should wait until their 30's, 40's, 50's, even 60's before experimenting with drugs? that's how long it takes some people to finally feel comfortable in this world.

please do not be so close-minded. some people actually trust themselves, and those people have the right to do whatever it is they want with their bodies. i know i have made mistakes, but that's part of life, and those mistakes have helped mold me into the person i am. i would never go back to prevent something because i have always weighed my decisions at least enough so that i can learn from them if i wake up on the wrong side of the bed. if my kid told me he felt comfortable being responsible for himself and that he trusted himself to make proper decisions, i would probably let him do almost anything.
