Once the plant reaches 4 ft over all length (stem to tip) the poundage goes up significantly. Training can keep them squat and wide. But, the secret is getting the most out of the inter-nodel spacing, either by training or genetics..

So how DO you make the most of inter-nodal spacing. I’m the newest of newbies and am taking advice

The simple answer is Toping, FIMing, and super cropping.

The long answer is doing these things on the correct plant, at the correct times.

I have found that when the plant has begun flowering and has just about stopped stretching; super cropping can dramatically increase yields. Again, this comes down to genetics and timing. The tallest biggest plant in my garden this year is most likely going produce as much less than some other squatter wider plants in the garden, not a great producer for the amount of space, we shall see.. Her two sister plants are still different but one looks like a good breeder. Fast grower, light stable, large, large leaves, bug resistant, close internal spacing without much effort, flowers early, and has a smooth mouth watering smell. But it doesn't take well to topping, and the sex shows late. Both not favorable qualities, but there are almost always draw backs.

If you want to get a head start on plant breeding look at some rose breeding videos on you tube. Over 600 years of recorded history..

If you take a look at my grow link you will find many of the answers you are looking for.
