WW Autos on a 1st grow with a lighting question

Hi all, I’ve been lurking here a bit and it’s seems like a great place to find any support needed.
This is my 1st indoor grow. I’m doing WW autos in ffof with hps lighting. If the pics load you’ll see my WW seedlings about 15 days from breaking soil. I feel that they’re a little behind because the 1st week I screwed up and had the timer set 12/12. No big issues yet but I’m wondering about light placement.
Right now they’re set about 30inches under a 150w Hps that’s set on 18/6. I have a new 600hps with digital ballast so I can set it 250/400/600. I havnt unboxed the new light yet.
So… should I leave the 150w for now and if so I feel like my 30” distance may be too far, your thoughts? Or, should I set up the new light and start out on the 250 setting? Thoughts about a good distance to start it from. I realize that the light placement will have to be adjusted on the fly so I’m just looking for general opinions!

Sorry I am unable to answer the question correctly due to being used to leds in my setup. I do wanna say that I don’t think it would hurt the plants switching to the 250 but don’t quote me on that and let someone else verify that. As for distance I would check the heat with your hand and go from there but as I mentioned before do not quote me on any of this information as I use Leds and it has been a super long time since I have used a hps set up.

Hook up the new light IMO. Start it 30" from the canopy. Hold your hand right at the top of the plants. If your comfortable so are the plants. If it feels hot so you can't keep your hand there, raise it. But I doubt that will be an issue at 250w. How big is your grow space?

the grow space is about 3x5x8. I think I’ll take your advice and set up the new light in the next day or 2, I’m kind of anxious to get to the “final” set up. I have 2 150hps in the room currently but just running 1 of them as the plants are still quite small. Thanks!

No problem! That's a good size space, you can get away with a good amount of light in there. Personally I would start the light at 400w as high as it can go. I find it easier to lower the lights if I see stretching vs raising them all the damn time as they grow. Likewise I'd rather dim the light if the plants don't like it then try to guess when to turn it up. But that's just personal preference stuff, in the long run go with what your comfortable with.
