Lot of good suggestions so far, OP.
Only thing I would add, is start with some cheap seeds, or even bagseed to practice with when you are first starting.
No sense in spending 15-20 bucks a seed to experiment, right?:-P
That was one mistake I made, other than starting with Miracle Grow soil on my first indoor run. If you can find bagseed, definitely do as Bakatare says and test before buying. Otherwise, find an online retailer who hands out lots of freebies.

On top of what I said above, other immediate things you'll need to add to your kit are a temp/humidity guage, pH tester (digital) and pH up/down & calibration solutions, and possibly a small desktop-type fan to circulate air inside the tent... all the above can be bought online and locally for < $100 easy.

Get yourself a tent, an inline fan, a grow light, good soil some fem seeds, ph tester kit and some 3 or 5 gal Smart pots. Fill the pots with soil, give them about a gallon of water then plant your seed in your pot with the light close but not too close. Soon,(3-5 days) you will see a sprout. When that happens come back with more questions.

I would go with "cheap" over "bag". Problem with bag is, you may end up with one of those 24+ weeks super sativas out of Mexico that herms and stretches 3x etc.

Something like White Label Super Skunk, or one of the female seeds cheap packs.

LOL... I can see it now: "I bought this grow tent and I have thick branches growing out of my vent holes that are touching the ceiling... what now?!"

LOL ... I can envision plants crawling out of my windows ! I have looked at everything you guys have suggested, and i am going to but a complete tent kit and go that route. But I have been FUCKING DYING to try some Kali Mist !!! So even though it may not be the very best strain to start with, I just HAVE to try and see if I can grow it. Finding it on the Black Market has proven fucking impossible for me.

Thanks everyone... I will report back once the kit and seeds arrive.

Hello everyone. I so desperately want to enjoy growing. I am just soooo ignorant on how to grow anything. I feel really overwhelmed, especially after reading on this forum. It is a damned science for sure, and it feels like I could not live long enough to learn it all LOL.

So I went and purchased this book : http://www.amazon.com/Marijuana-Buds-Less-Grow-Than/dp/0932551874/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

I read through it, and felt SO very happy and confident that I could do it ! I saw the daily photos as a really easy way to compare my plants to the authors, and make sure I was right on track. But then I felt deflated when I saw so many experienced growers saying it was nothing more than a grow journal, and not very good as a how to grow book .... Well fuck me ! Now I do not really know how to really begin. And I had thought it was going to be really easy ....

I understand that most every person who posts on this forum, wants easy answers without putting any effort in. And I assume it is most likely that EVERYTHING a person could ever need to know is on the pages of this huge forum. But unfortunately I take care of a VERY sick wife, and just do not have enough time to spend months reading through this forum.

So I would truly appreciate any info you can give me, and I would appreciate any links to the threads most likely to help me to understand what it is I am about to try doing, and if you can direct me to any really good books or DVDs for BEGINNERS , that I can actually understand ( not overly advanced or scientific ) , I sure would appreciate the help. I want to join the ranks of small growers that enjoy what they do, but my wife's circumstances really do warrant needing help from someone willing to lend a hand.

Thanks so much
My advice as someone who just got into this myself: dont let anyone tell you how to grow.

Learn everything you can, take all opinions into consideration and make an informed decision on how you want to do things and you will be fine.
There is so much conflicting opions on how to grow weed but it really is a persoanl thing how you do it. Find what works for you and have confidence in what your doing.
All weed needs to thrive is the proper enviroment, as long as you provide that your golden, how you provide it is up to you
happy gardening!

Don't overwater, Don't over nute..good soil and good light. Prevent pests instead of fighting em. And move air. I agree with bagseed but good bagseed. Probably an indica dominate. Use a starter soil for the seeds. Have fun and be aware there are debates on many techniques. You will learn what works for you.

I agree with the others, patience is the most important requirement of any kind of grow but especially weed. I still consider myself a noob and I am going into my third year of growing. There's a lot of great advice here but honestly, I watched a lot of videos too. Grow420Guide on youtube is the bomb. He's even got his own website now and you can ask him questions too. Get you some seeds going and start having some fun LST'ng and topping, it is so therapeutic to mold these plants into pure gold :) most important of all.... HAVE FUN WITH IT!

DON'T BUY GIMMICKS.. THE MORE SIMPLE IT IS THE BETTER FOR YOUR FIRST GO ROUND!!

The guy that posted the 9 steps to learn up above put it very well.... just learn those 9 steps 1 at a time before you get to the next step and you will be doing pretty good for a first grow..

If you are capable of growing multiple plants I would suggest going in a cycle so that right after you start flowering you start vegging the next crop, that way everything you learned you can put into practice right away.. and even then don't plant all you can handle just do two or three at a time.. You will probably learn more with every grow than you did on the previous one..

I am only allowed 12 plants in my state and I am going to be flowering 9 plants at a time in 3 different phases while vegging the next crop... that way I am constantly learning something about all phases and constantly ready to put into practice what I just learned..

Take lots of notes on your results, you are the best teacher you will ever have..

and if you want to be as simple as possible I would say to put seeds in Fox Farms Light Warior and transplant into Fox Farm Ocean Forest and you can get away with not using nutes or just get it fugured out about half way into flowering..

Hey man there is a lot of advice here. I mean a lot, so I recommend you browse daily. Ask questions and use the given advice to suit your needs or wants. Most of what I know about growing (damn little :-)) I learned it here. I find new shit here everyday and use what appeals to me. That is what I like best about growing is all the different things and ways you can do it. So cheer up man it may seem hard now but when you smoke your first bud from your first grow it's worth all the time and patience.

Start out small, I saw you already bought a tent kit but really.
Try to start some bag seed.
Buy a bag of seed starter soil and a couple of cfl bulbs.
As your plant grows so will you.
Teach each other before pissing away your time, money and patience.

I suggest, “Don’t worry, be happy”
Don’t panic, lots of patience, and waiting, and I agree with others, KISS…
Come on, you must have some bag seed ….
Plant a couple now under some CFL’s to get you started…
Do not be afraid… Just Do It! If/when your tent gets here, you’ll be ready!
Seriously, it’s not as easy as Mr2shim says, as watching TV… However, you can watch TV and grow at the same time…Ha…
It be a growing…. And it’s good….
BTW…. Growing MJ keeps me sane…
Good Luck man!

A good book for beginners is Jorge Cervantes "Marijuana Horticulture/The indoor Outdoor Medical Growers Bible" on Amazon for $20. Buy it. Peace

For what it's worth...

I have heard a few people on here say to start with bag seed (not familiar with that term but I assume it means schwag seeds???) and cfl's... I COULDN'T DISAGREE MORE! and this is just my personal opinion based on how I like to do things...

Depending on how serious you are and what your motivation is for growing herb but when I started (very recently) I wanted the best of the best results so before I spent what little money I had.. I did lots of reading...... That being said..

In my opinion; If you want to grow the best or the biggest start out shooting for that.. If you have lots of time and NO money then ya get some bag seeds and cfl's and start learning and improving but if you are serious I suggest DO IT AS GOOD AS YOU CAN AS SOON AS YOU CAN and it will pay off much quicker...

I am about two weeks from harvest and I am so very pleased with my first grow and if I would have used lame seeds and cfl's it would not be near as beautifull.. I know it gets much much better but I will include some pics of what research, time and money can get you on your first try..

I feel like there is a ton of information from members on this site. With that being said,I believe that alot of it also hinges on personal preference. The statement "more than one way to skin a cat" comes to mind. For various aspects of growing you may find 4 and 5 different ways to achieve the same thing.People will defend their way of growing, because they know it works. If you feel overwhelmed I suggest you read on what it is every plant needs and go from there. It may not be some "Super Dank" on your first grow, but that is called learning. At the very least observe mother nature and do what she does.Mimic what she gives her plants on the most rudimentary level in your home. The only way to go is up if you start at the bottom.Good luck my friend, and listen to your plants above all else.

Like I said before whatever you read will help you about 5% the other 95% is learnt from hands on experience in other words learning from failure so it doesn't happen again, this cant be learnt in a book. So get growing so you can learn the hard way, its the only way.

There's so many ways to grow you won't find any answers here thats going to help.
If your going to grow in a tent then go to https://www.rollitup.org/stealth-micro-cab-growing/
would be a good start I grew inside 1 year and decided to grow out doors after almost failing because of a mite infestation
my first out door gave me enough to carry me thru till the following year.
Theres good advise here just don't believe in what just 1 person will say till you get to know who to trust
and who to ignore :).
Good Luck.
Oh yea 1 more thing I also grow from clones.
If you really need this medicine for the wife you should move to a State that allows MMJ///.
