Man this thread really blew up! Great debate everyone, and way to keep things light Aero, I think what I get out of this thread is that you should not listen to one source of info on topic like this, and that you should do much more research before stressing you plant in anyway, and if you do experiment, do it with a plant that has had a light dropped on it! Good on all ya....

Yeah and thats cool, but if you got say white widow and its 20% thc, how much would you add by using the nail, would it really jump up that much to make it worth the loss of weight in the bud by doing this in the time when the bud should be fattening up?
most of the strains i do this with are more like sensi star, not like white widow. secondly i dont recall ever "losing" weight. like, by doing this you make up loss of weight with potency, no not at all. most of the strains, the weight stays the same, although the resins are much more sticky, thats all. peace

I have to disagree sketch. Even if you leave it till just a few days before harvest, with that kind of stress to your plant it will need to repair itself. It could also go into shock. The final few days are very important for adding weight. If the plant is having to repair a wound it cannot give as much time to adding weight. What it does is instead start producing more resin in an attempt to protect itself.

While it is doing this how can you expect the plant to also gain as much weight? I'm sure you tie your main branches for exactly the same reason. The plant doesn't need to rely as much on growing a thicker stem and can instead concentrate on growing bud.

I can't wait. Could you start another thread and pm me the link? How big is the nail going to be?

Also, i was more referring to indoor plants. Outdoor plants have thicker stems and are naturally more hardy.

You can be easily excused for thinking we were talking about indoors, seeing as we are in the indoor thread :-s

ahhhh! i have never done it on indoor. yes the stalk is too small. but for the name of science of course i will. i have 7 sensi star vegging at the moment the are over a foot and a half that im going to switch over this weekend. so it will be 2 months plus a couple days before we see that though. i dont mind experimenting with the sensi star, im so over this strain, im just trying to cross with mr nice right now. never thought i would want to get a male so bad!

hahahahahahahaha..... yea the newb stuck this thread in the indoor spot. oh well. indoors this might not work as well. but from much experience and with advice from the likes of jorge cervantes. pinching the stalk is the way to go for outdoor grows. when your plant reaches 4-5 ft tall, you have to have that extra stem growth. otherwise your plant might not be able to hold the weight of all the bud it produces, especially when an outdoor plant can yield over a pound. also the veg. period for outdoor plants is significantly longer. probably by a couple months. also i never stress plants during flowering.

on a side note, hermies in my opinion are hard to come by. atleast by stressing the plant. i may be wrong on this but, i think that you really have to over stress plants to do this and only during flowering. i mean how do you really know if you stressed a plant into hermie if it wasn't in flower? thats the only time your can positively tell what sex the plant is.

Yes, hermies mostly occur when plants are in flower. during veg they can take much more abuse. For example during veg' it is quite safe to turn on a light during dark period. Something you should NEVER consider doing during flower.

Flowering is a delicate time for the plant. There are no males around and the fem's can easier go hermie the longer they go without getting pollinated. Often they go hermie without you noticing, and you end up with one or two seeds in your bud.
