Most of us feel the way we do about ourselves because of the society that we live in. If we lived in a society where big, large, or fat was the ideal form most would be fine with the way they looked. But we don't and we hear it and see it everywhere. When a person does not feel good about the way that they look, most times it doesn't come from inside, it's the outside influences that makes them think they are not like everyone else so they make themselves feel not good enough because of the outside.I have an eating disorder, and I have to say it's a common misconception that the media is to blame. It's a deep running psychological issue, often with links to addictive and obsessive-compulsive type tendencies or perfectionism. It's completely illogical, I know, but the effects on the body are only a secondary symptom of what's going on in the mind.
Eating disorders are more than just not feeling good enough for a man, bitchy girls or the media- they're about not even feeling good enough for Yourself.
Yes, I have to agree with what you said, it applies to some people, but not everyone. Sorry about your illness, but some (most IMO) of us stress over the image.I don't think you get the nature of an eating disorder as an illness. What makes it a dangerous illness and not just you using your initiative (I.e seeing skinny girls as accepted, then concluding if you are skinny, the same will happen) is that you start thinking completely irrationally. Even if the whole world turned around and said 'Fat is Cool' tomorrow, someone with a real problem would still feel sick to the pit of their stomach if they woke up and couldn't see their hipbones or feel all their ribs.
There's dieting to fit in, and then there's a real psychological illness. One can cross over into the other, but EDs are more than just 'image'.
