Would an "external filter box" like this work?

Hey guys,

See pics attached.

I have a very small cab that I didn't want to mount the carbon filter inside...

So I've run a pipe to a rubbermaid tub and mounted the carbon filter inside it.

The pipe, ducting, and filter are all 4" and I have a 4" 160cfm fan that I'll attach to the end of the ducting.

As you can see, the tub is quite small, would I be better off with a bigger tub?

This is just a prototype I whipped up in 10 minutes (didn't even cut the holes cut in the correct place), but just want to know if the concept would work because I've not seen it before.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

That's a tiny filter. Not seen one that small. I like it.

Where will the fan be placed? To the ducting which the filter is attached or the ducting which is not attached to the filter?

Can you draw a little diagram or something.
 
Yup that'll work as long as you suck through the box and don't blow into it. I want to do the same thing with my big filter, right now I'm pushing through it, it's not optimal. I'm really surprised there isn't someone marketing an inline filter for this type of use.
 
I'm building the box for exactly that reason... so that I can pull through the filter... otherwise I would just put the filter the end of the ducting :)
 
What about filling a pair of pantyhose with carbon and just dropping it in the tote.
Drill a bunch of holes on the lid to let the filtered air out.
Be relatively easy to recharge and add more to if needed.
 
Phresh does make an inline filter like this but it is pricey. I just have my fan outside the cab and push through the filter at the end. My filter is stashed inside a stack of wire drawers. The only problem I've had is stank leaking through the fan which I fixed by wrapping the fan in plastic wrap. This looks like an inexpensive and stealthy solution if you don't use a transparent box.
 
ive used similar for awhile, I use a wooden box with fan/filter and ballasts inside to keep them aircooled too. an idea ive had recently is a big garbage can, your tote probably wont hold up to the vacuum.
