Get a ballast that you can just screw in either an HPS or MH bulb. I wouldn't get anything less than 400w. Use the MH for veg and then switch out the bulb to HPS when you start flowering. Just make sure your bulbs match the wattage of the ballast. By far the best set up you can possibly go with.

LED's are great for added spectrum but they lack the Lumens and penetration needed for flowering. Go with the Convertable 400 or 600w HiD and either cool tubes or vented, sealed hoods with a good in-line fan.

Get a digital ballast. I bought my whole setup on line (400w digital ballast, reflector, jiffy raise mounts and 400w hps bulb) for somewhere around 120 bucks. That makes it as simple as going to Home Depot and buying a 400w mh bulb for about 20 bucks (you'll want that for the veg cycle). You ain't gotta worry about no conversion bulb or any of that horseshit. You ain't gotta fuck with nothing but screwing in and out bulbs. I bought my setup online. Just google it and you may find one even cheaper. Anyone that chooses to contradict me on the idea of MH then HPS growing is more than welcome to do so, but I'm certain this is the best option. Only problem with HIDs is a little more heat and a little more electricity. My AC bill went up about 20 a month running 24/0. My rate here is .0943 per KWH.

At the very least you would need two of those LED's to match the HID. A good rule of thumb is that you would want half the LED wattage to match an HID (assuming you are using quality led's in a suitable spectral arrangement). I also am not a fan of the UFO's, they are less expensive, but they are lower quality, and spectrally are not ideal imo. You will pay a large premium for LED (though some of that is just up front because you will save a bit on power and bulb replacements), so most people find that HID's are better for them. HID's have been tried and found true for 20 years, so they have that going for them too. LED's (at least for growing) is a new technology.

I use a 126w Hydro grow LED and it works great. I am 5 weeks into flowering and I could not be more satisfied. The reason I shelled out $475 for this LED unit is because I didn't want to pay a higher electric bill, have to constantly buy high priced bulbs, and I would not be able to deal with the extra heat. There is enough proof to support LED's, watt for watt, will beat mh/hps. What's not true is the fact LED companies are unrealistic about their comparisons. 126w LED= 250W hps IMO. Alot of people on many forums do not like LED technology but I do.

HPS is the concensus. Get a magnetic ballast. If you need MH you can get one that is compatible with a HPS ballast.
