Worth it or not?

Hi everyone,

Short time reader (I have to be honest, but I can't stay off the forum since I found it) first time posting.

I wanted to run a grow cabinet set up by you guys. I was thinking of using this cabinet:

Which is roughly W x L x H (15 1/2" x 36"x 6').
I only have a max 6'6" of space in the basement.

My question is about the lighting, but will fill in other details below as I would like to do a journal with LEDs from a rookies perspective.

I was thinking of going with the Onxy bloom ($491 delivered). That is right in line with what Area 51 has on for their summer sale. I know I might get a wide variety of opinion on this choice but I guess the moat important question is if one panel would do for this whole area? I dont mind paying a fair price for a fair product, I just want to have realistic expectations before I start.

My aim for first grow (3 plants was what I was thinking) would be 2 oz. If I get less it would be a learning experience, if I get more, amen. After a few grows I would hope to get it up to 3oz.

In your opinions would those numbers be reachable for someone willing to learn but with little experience. (One grow 5 years ago under an 400 hps which I still have). I didn't really like the feeling of having it running in the basement-- a slight uneasiness over safety.

The rest of the set up would be:

The grow medium would be soil (sunshine mix I believe it is called).

The nutes are Advanced nutrients "Jungle juice" 2 part. (For Veg. Would need to get supplies for flower)

6" inline fan with speed control with carbon filter. Maybe a 4" but I feel like the 6 is more versatile if I ever want or need to switch environments. Would most likely mount outside the box and pull the air out.

Intake vent-- start with one and check airflow and adjust accordingly.

Water. Bottled water (reverse osmosis). The ph is high so I correct it as best I can but only have a simple test kit. I try to make the water pee color.

As for seeds. I have quite a few bag seed options but since I want to do a journal I will order some. Would be open to suggestions for a forgiving short strain. Dont really see the point of auto indoors but open to suggestions. Definitely want fem seeds though for first time.

Room temp currently is 24.5 Celsius and stays fairly similar all year.

Hi mate, I'm setting up a cabinet just a bit smaller (in another thread). I like the metal cabs as they don't look out of place (mines lockable which also dosen't look unusual- being locked : )) and wont burn : ?

Sounds like you should have a fighting chance. Not familiar with the Onyx output but 100-150 watts should work, especially in a basement where you can control the temps. I have A51's 160w light and it may be a bit much in my cab (so i'm just building a 100w light) but then you do have a few extra inches all round. Controlling the temps will be the challenge. I'm just using case fans but also venting the room with similar.

I have a few grows using nutes but straight hydro (coco) grows so can't help much. There's a lot to learn with soil growing that ends up back with things being at their most simple (nothing in my soil is bought (edit- besides the aeration)). I'd suggest a big mass of soil/big pots at they can buffer temps/ watering but really in a balanced soil ph should be your least concern. Iv'e never grown in such a small space but what I apply from other grows is to keep the variables as simple or familiar to what youv'e done before as possible as it will bring enough challenges of its own.

Thanks for the response. Id have no problem changing up what I use, and doesn't have to be stealth at all. They just have a smoking deal on those cabinets.

I wish I had and extra foot of height down there, but so is life.

No worries, I had a look at that Onyx light, see it mentioned here a bit. You should hit 3-5 oz with that light easily enough. Headroom less of an issue with led depending on reflectors etc. (my 3w A51 light is ok to around 14" then plants seem to suffer (not sure if others found this?) Maybe a lower wattage or wider beam would help in a cab grow? Scrog, mainline? Anyhow, whether it's overkill for a cab time will tell, good luck.

Perfect. If I could hit 3 consistently I have no worries at all. I will definitely do a journal and diy on making it if I go with the cabinet.

A tent is a pretty simple idea as well. The cabinet would end up being more expensive and time consuming, but also pretty sexy when finished.

Any recommended strain?

Yeah a squarer tent or bigger space might do the light more justice.. and more air space (buffer). I'd probably choose the new smaller a-51's (75w) perhaps 2 of them.. even better, the bigger light with room to let it ripp!

Strains I'm familiar with, something pretty easy, I found JS Skunk, AK47, Berry Bomb good starters, something tending to indica. About the only pattern iv'e had with the older, popular strains is Barneys (fuckin) Farm- 3 strains and they have either: not popped, grew as stalks (no leaves) or most recently (Vanilla Kush) the first plant iv'e ever pulled out in disgust (rant over : ))..

Can't really say on the Onyx but since you mentioned the A51. I can tell you this much... I have an XGS-190 and a RW-150 in a 2'x4'x8'. I keep my house at 76*F while the lights are on and I'm using a 4" centrifugal for exhaust with a 21" carbon scrubber(~8lb carbon). Temps in the room run at 81*F with both lights.

I think you will find these to be guaranteed winners. Fast finish, great yield and amazing flavors, HSO EMDOG fems. I only wish that is what I started with LOL

My a51 grows were in an attic so i'm pretty cautious when it comes to heat, the footprint is only a few inches wider than the box so none should be wasted.
