Worried about moving up to 8000 watts, am I pushing the limit?

Well first time here, and to give you my history I've been running 4 x 1000w, with the extras, for a couple years now. My electric bumped from an average of maybe 1100kwh/month to about 3100kwh/month. I'm not concerned about the cost, electric is cheap anyways here.

I recently added a second room, same everything, 4 x 1000w. I ran it for a couple days to estimate the usage, and holy crap. Its going to be over 5000kwh/month, every month. Probably 7000kwh in the summer.

I've done all the easy stuff - lights are 7w cfl, new washer/dryer, short shower with lowflow heads, insulate water heater, turn stuff off, etc. I also use the HPS heat in winter to heat my home, and run everything at night.

Its a 1200 square foot home, good insulation, windows, everything. So pretty small, but all electric. I've considered swapping my 11 seer heat pump for geothermal, but wont have the money (I've heard $20,000) for 2 months. I'm not sure they can dig up the yard for geothermal when the ground is froze in a couple months. I also worry about the technician needing in the house for the install. Actually, that scares the shit out of me. And would 20,000 in cash look shady?

I've survived so far by keeping off the radar, but I'm not so sure now. On the flip side, I've never heard of anyone getting busted by the electric around here, its a private company.

So what do you think? Am I pushing my luck?

Welcome stranger! The #1 reason people get busted is they run their mouth to friends, family, and friends tell other friends that do not know you and could care less if you rot in prison. Reason #2 is greed. If you've got 4KW now and making it, I wouldn't try to sweeten it by doubling it; it's just not worth the risk. If you're moving the product and have the extra demand you may want to consider something else a lot less risky, like building a shop or something.

You could bypass your electric meter, or steal electricity from your neighbors.

No, no, j/k!! Stealing is wrong and will only get you in trouble.

Rent a small commercial warehouse. You will never need to worry about electricity looking funny and if you are currently on a tiered electrical program you'll be save a shit ton on electricity - probably enough to offset the additional rent.

I've thought about this, but renting would be tough. What if the landlord shows? Or the fire department to do their annual check? I've though about buying a business/commercial spot, but I don't make enough money on paper to get a loan.

I don't really want to be Mr. BigTimeGrower, but I'm only getting about 4 pounds per harvest. Maybe I'm not doing something right?

Also, my electricity is cheap, and the more I use, the cheaper the price. I think cali is the opposite.

Yeah, the electric doesn't cost much. It's the usage I'm concerned about. Does anyone here use 5,000 kwh/month?
Buy a huge used glass or ceramic kiln - these things use a ton of electricity, place it in a shed and if anyone ever questions your usage show it to them. ;)

Generally as long as you pay your bills they electric company doesn't care. Your power consumption can be looked up by the police in order to get a search warrant, but that is only after they have enough suspicion that you're up to something to get a warrant to pull the electric files.

Buy a big silent run generator... dig a hole inside you house (1m x1m x1m)... hang it off bungee's inside the hole with some thick steel plate on top and insulate the bottom and sides... exaust fumes out your chimney... an easy access fuel line to it and wire it up so you can control from somewhere else in the house and run it during the day so peeps cant hear that very low hum... I think you could get that up and running for 4 or 5 k assuming your reasonably good with your hands and google!!!
