Worms

Where do people source worms from? Everywhere around me seems to be out of stock. Could I get them from a fishing/bait shop for now? What varieties or species am I looking for and what ones if any should I avoid? Also any special tips or care keeping them alive and thriving in large smart pots or beds? Thank you.

I added about 25 worms and a half gallon castings full of eggs this year to each bed and 150 gallon pots. As long as you keep the mulch and top inches moist they do fantastic. I probably have 200 in each bed at least now if not more. The whole top of soil is beautiful humus now. Just compost/mulch and top dress keep them multiplying.

As far as I understand it, the little bait worms are red wigglers, but they're more expensive for less worms.

Blueridgevermaculture.com has worms, castings, and cocoons. It says cocoons won't be available again until spring. His castings are really good quality. Found this place on recommendation from Coot in a podcast.

Second this. I got a mix of night crawlers (european?) and red wigglers from Uncle Jims.

This was about four months ago. In that time, I started two more smart pots of worms, trying to harvest a good amount from older bins and putting them into newer bins.
