I started with vermiculite/perlite using a homemade hydro 30 years ago or so. Seems like many tout aeroponics, coco cour, deep water, hence we happy few.

My setup is a DYI hydro runs 2x a day 15 minutes each. Check that thread I linked if you want more. I mean, cloning really doesn't need daily attention. I could leave mine for days, but mine seems best at weekly water changes.

I live in an apartment, so diy can't be done for fear of flooding.
Shit I'm watering every dam day as it is with promix organic grow and its killing me.
If I started the seed in promix as it can last 2 weeks b4 nutes are needed. Then transplant into hempy, would that work?
Or would the promix wash away from the stem?
I love promix for the ph stability, but it's been going hydrophobic on me, hence the everyday watering.

I don't know dude if you can go hempy without hydro. But I'm the n00b to this term, so I may be wrong. I have one strain that gets too thirsty at 600w on my HPS and it leans more sativa so I put its clone in the flower too. This hempy with hydro has me to a place where I can be picky.

I started a whole thread on my system before I realized that the mix was a 'thing' called hempy. On phone, so not smart enough to link it. But it's down there with redneck in the title and I guess I did link it above if you want to see all the pics.

I'm getting damn near 100% clone success by just cutting, sticking it into it's own cup of the hempy mix, and sticking right into the system. Maybe mist the leaves sometimes. But they hardly even skip a beat.

But @Moebius why did the vermiculite/perlite mix that I used 30 years ago as well get called "Hempy"?

I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding of the hempy method is that it's not just about the medium. It also means you're using a container with a drain hole an inch or two above a solid bottom, creating a reservoir in the bottom. And the bottom layer is just plain perlite.

Also, some folks do hempy with other media in place of or in addition to vermiculite, such as coco coir or peat. But yeah, other than that, it's pretty simple and just a variation on what growers have been doing forever. I liked running automated top drip with 2 liter containers for a SOG setup. I also used the drip system with a hempy-style mix in 3 gallon fabric pots. The lack of a reservoir in the fabric pots was compensated for with more frequent waterings.

Always interested to see how others do it, so thanks for sharing. I mix and match a lot of different things, but everything I've tried has been done by somebody here.

"Hempy" was the handle of a guy on OG who grew football sized buds in buckets of perlite/vermiculite with a drain hole and wowed many/all who saw his buds. Thus...the buckets became "Hempy buckets". As you guys note...some of us were doing the same thing in different containers. I was in a crawlspace...'91 til 2006. Folks who were there back then know it wasn't easy to source grow supplies/there were no grow stores...but nearly every area had a decent nursery with perlite/vermiculite. I'd read about someone starting tomatoes in that mix...and the whole "I'm growing tomatoes...wink...wink" thing was in full effect...so that's where I ended up. For containers I used 1-gallon milk jugs....cut off at a level above the handle about 1-2"....but I left the handle....which then served as a holder for a short 2 ft bamboo stake. Tie up 120 clones in a 12 x 12 space under 2K ala SOG ....hand water em every 2 days....and stand back...LOL Good times. No automation...just yer eyes and yer passion.

I'd love to try a bucket outside this year.

Like ^^^you, back in the day it was much easier to get vermiculite/perlite than other soilless solutions. I used to grow in 18-20oz plastic cups with generous drainage holes.

Worked out then. So I did it again. The strains these days are much better and am quite happy with my results doing it the same way. Came across here calling the mix hempy.
