will this work as a cheap carbon filter?

Its a benchtop smoke absorber for sodering.
the 3 pack of carbon filters are only $ 6

Or would I be better off buying a 28oz box of pelletized actived carbon, and then pouring it into a 4 inch tube with cotton batting at both ends.

I've gone a similar route to this.

I bought an activated carbon cooker extractor fan panel, then I will get some wire mesh to make it rigid and pour 3" of activated carbon pellets on top of it, then finish off with another bit of mesh for the top to contain it all.

It will sit on the roof of the box, so the air will escape at its own rate, and wont stink the place out!
