Why is g/W used as the benchmark?

I've never tried it, just heard that it had THC-V and Subcool and his wife Jill said THC-V was an appetite suppressant. I'm not speaking from experience just something I saw on a youtube video.

The jury is still out on whether it is an appetite suppressant. It is structurally similar to some other appetite suppressants, which is probably where the inquiry into whether it is an appetite suppressant started. Remember that any cannabis extract with high THCV is going to have a significant amount of THC in it, which will also be interacting with the cannabinoid receptors. From my own personal experience with THCV (everyday consumption, all day, of ~40% THCV concentrate), I can definitely say it reduces anxiety for me. It is a shorter lasting high, and has very little drowsy effect. Someone else I know who uses THCV for PTSD mentioned to me that their doctor suggested that there is a strong correlation between anxiety and appetite in the brain, so he wasn't surprised that THCV potentially affected both.

I always thought grams/watt was a dealer thing.
It is. Exclusively. But idiots picked it up and ran with it spreading it as the gospel when it isn't.

Dealers grow the same plants, the same exact way, over and over again. They don't change their medium, nutrients, setups, nothing. They do this so they can get steady, predictable yields and quality and they do it on a scale much, much larger than we do. Where most people here are in a fucking tent for crying out loud, they're in a warehouse.

In doing that, grams per watt has an actual use. The single greatest cost of growing is your lighting bill, so anything you can do to lower that cost is beneficial to you as a dealer, especially when you're lighting up about 5,000 square feet of space rather than a 16 square foot tent.

When you're a guy like most of us growing 2 to 6 plants in a tent, it has no meaning at all in the grand scheme of things.

g/W is like putting your thumb in the wind to see what direction it's going.

Even if everyone were using g/kWh, however, chances are that people with low g/W would translate to low g/kWh anyway.

It seems less like people trying to clear up what would be a helpful unit and more like people being upset that someone else's g/W is higher.

Edit: In other words, I don't see people with 1g/W or greater complaining nearly as much as people who have less than 1g/W. The argument that gpw is a poor unit is generally used more of as an excuse than as clarification.

I guess your parents pay for your electricity?
No, child. I do. I have for the last 36 years.

Let me dumb it down to the "complete village idiot" level you obviously require:

If you're growing in a 4 x 4 tent, the cost of a 600 watt HPS vs. a 450 watt Cob is only going to make about a 6 dollar to 8 dollar difference per month in energy costs during flower stage and maybe 12 to 13 dollars per month veg stage.

But if you're a licensed seller and you're going to be running 50 of those fixtures, then that adds up very, very quickly to a difference of up to 400 dollars per month or more.

So for the individual growing in a tent, it's not a very relevant difference in money. For the professional grower, it quickly turns into a couple thousand dollars per year in lost revenue.

Get it now, dumbass or do you need it dumbed down even further?

No, I think you've dumbed things up enough for now.

Here's the actual math in a preemptive strike:

600 watt HPS 12/12 schedule = $7.92 per month (11 per kwh)
450 watt Cob 12/12 schedule = $5.94 per month

600 watt HPS 18/6 schedule = $11.88 per month
450 watt Cob 18/6 schedule = $8.91 per month

So the overall difference is $1.98 per month flower, $2.97 per month veg from the HPS to the cob.

A completely negligible difference in the grand scheme of things for a single 4 x 4 tent grower.

If you live in the USA.

Interesting, didn't realize it was supposed to be an appetite suppressant. THC-V content was one of the reasons I selected JTR a few years back, wanted some passed on to crosses. Limonene was the other as I believe it adds mould/PM resistance. My JTR pheno is the lemon-pinesol pheno and is essentially immune to PM. I've had plants with PM touching JTR and it never got a spot. My Blue Ripper (Blueberry x JTR) phenos all have PM/mould resistance which is great for outdoor where I am, it's all over the place here.

I tend to get the munchies regardless of what I smoke so can't judge any differences with THC-V. I like the JTR high, very up, get shit done but no doubt that you're stoned. Any TGA gear I've smoked has always had great flavours.

Grams per watt is just one way of gauging how well your setup is doing.

Just like the good breeders will know their genetics and list the grams per square meter you should expect.

From there you look at your floor space, choose a light accommodate the restraints, build, then check to see how well you did using the light's output to your yield, grams per watt.

I want to try Jack The Ripper by Subcool 420, It supposedly is high in THC-V that is an appetite suppressant. I am the worst for getting munchies and eating everything in the house right before bed time.
Dude I never knew that about THC-V! I've got to start seeking it out. But you and me both man, I've been known to go as far as to bake a batch of cookies minutes before bedtime...it can be baddddd

I understand that it is a nice number that ranges around 1.0, but since time is electricity = money, wouldn't it be more useful to use e.g grams/(watts*hours) or even grams/(watts*months)?

That would differentiate between longer/expensive/high-yield grows and shorter/cheaper/low-yield grows that use the same lighting.

Just curious...

I never even mentioned COB.

GPW is utter BS as a benchmark or measurement of anything.

On my second grow I came damn near 2 gpw. So, that either means I'm F'n awesome or, gpw means absolutely nothing. I mean, it couldn't have anything to do with the strains I grew or the medium they grew in, right? My friends are impressed so, it has to be my master growing skillz yo.

You decide. :bigjoint:

My 1st go proved I could get to the finish line. 2nd showed I could pull weight from my space (accidentally). NOW, I need to figure out how to keep happy plants.

GPW means about as much as the duration of your morning piss imo.

What strain gave you two grams per watt?

Did you use CMH/HPS/MH/LED?

How many watts?

Any hoods or reflectors?

What was the area?

What was the volume?

How many plants?

Soil or hydro?

Any training or techniques?

Did you use CO2?

This was all a happy accident. Switched lights and medium for that grow and I guess I picked just the right seeds to pop.

What strain gave you two grams per watt? Canuck Auto Cheese freebie and World Of Seeds Auto Amnesia

Did you use CMH/HPS/MH/LED? COB, 6 individual lights @55w ea.

How many watts? 220w for a ~month, 330w through flower.

Any hoods or reflectors? No.

What was the area? 2.5'x5'x10' H closet.

How many plants? 3 = 1 Cheese, 2 Amnesia

Soil or hydro? Anmesia in Coco Hempys (with airstones under inverted netpots surrounded by hydrtoton in the bottom) treated as drain to waste around week 3 as they were going through over a gallon/day at that point. Cheese was in Kind Soil.

Any training or techniques? Cheese was topped @ day 26 (early stretch). Amnesia grew naturally.

Did you use CO2? no

Cheese produced 6.5oz, the Amnesias totaled just shy of 16oz. Had I grown 1 more auto or weighed what I set aside for hash, edibles, I likely would have gone beyond 2gpw.

If I knew what I was doing, there probably would have been much more. When those beans are back in stock I want to try 4 Amnesia just to see if I can squeeze 2lbs from 4 autos. That has #fail written ALL over it. :bigjoint:
