Why I chose Hempy Buckets

Hey guys,

Just thought I would let you in on a little journey i have gone through and where im at today.
It all started about a year ago, i decided i would start a small operation so i could smoke for free. From the start of the journey until now i wish i had something to read, or rather stumbled upon the information sooner (its all in here some where, you just need to do the searches) when i started so i could have saved a lot of time and money. Although im still small, 32 plants between two spaces, its bigger and easier then the original 4-6 i started with.

Originally like most i started with soil, and i made all the amateur mistakes, from too much nutes, to over watering. Basically i spent to much time worrying and not enough enjoying of the beauty that is the marijuana plant. Dont get me wrong, soil is rather easy and it does take alot of the issues with over fertilization out of the equation, due to the buffering effects of soil.

In the middle of my soil grows i started reading an article about an easy method of growing in a passive hydro system (which i can not locate the article now). It basically talked about using perlite in a cat litter tray with a few plants. It did work, but my problem was that there was no drainage at all and i ended up with what i believe was a case of nute lockout due to salt buildup.

From there i read about how great aeroponics was, and i decided to give that a go. I found that this system was a lot of extra work, from the constant pHing from the swings, to the awkward water changes (made a tote with a drain spout) and the leaking that i encountered, i found that it just wasn't for me. If i had to travel i was worried about pump burn outs and complicated explanations for my partner on how to pH, how to change the water and so on.

Then finally i found this article about hempy buckets and i gave it a spin. Boy oh boy am i telling you, it was the best and easiest solution of my life. The pros of the system are that there is basically no over watering, if a pump dies (ill get to that) your plants should survive for 3-4 days on the hempy reserve, the cost of perlite is very very cheap, and in my opinion easier to dispose of if your tossing in a garbage (1/10th the wieght).

So what is hempy, well again refer to this article, but basically it is a bucket with a drainage hole drilled about 1.5-3 inches from the bottom. (I drilled my hole about 2.5" up, using a 1 inch bit so basically the bottom of the hole sits at 2" up) When you water this bucket the water fills up the bottom of the bucket and then flows out the hole when it gets too high. You fill this bucket with washed perlite (make sure you wash it other wise you will get a clay like substance in the bottom of the pot and worse in the bottom of your res) and plant your rooted plant in this perlite. For the first 5-15 days it will be a little work, as you will need to water at the stem straight down, so that the plant forms its tap root down to the bottom of the hempy bucket. Once this is complete then you can sit back and relax, water only every couple of days, or if you are over eager, water as much as you like, the bucket will self regulate and prevent you from drowning your plants.

So what does this setup cost? well lets make a quick break down. Keep in mind you can make it cheaper if you reuse 2L pop bottles, or coffee cans, build your own room ect.

My Setup cost
------------------
Grow tent 4'x4' (best investment i ever made, aside from light) - $120
600W HPS Light - $150 (got it from craigslist or kijiji, ballast, bulb, and fixture)
16 Plastic Trash Cans from dollar stores - 16 @ $2 = $32
Perlite, purchased huge bag that filled 32 trash cans for about - $30
Plastic Mesh (to cover the 1" holes and keep the perlite in the can) - $2
Silicone Glue (food safe, to hold the plastic mess around the hole) - $5
Drill and bits were free, but borrow a drill and bit is less then - $5
Wood Trough with drain - $40
Water Pump (im using a 340gph pump to do 16 cans) - $30
Tubing for a drip system, plus connectors and t's $40
Fan from walmart $10
5 gal bucket for a reservoir -$5
4 Plastic Milk Totes (to set the trough on, and the reservoir under)- Free (took from behind a local corner store)
Misc little costs lets say $20
Total - $484 (keep in mind you need the light anyways, i also didn't add in nutes of your choice and some sort of filter/odor prevention is recommended, but it can weight until you switch to flower)

Feel free to ask some questions.

Thought i would just do an update to show what the table looks like. It is built from wood, then covered with black and white poly. It then drains into a bucket and is used to water the plants via a fountain pump and drip system.

Here is a picture of some girls in the room:

I have not reused it, but I would have no issues doing it.. Especially if I flushed the last week before chop. This way the perlite should be relatively clean of any previous ferts. However, I have easy access to more perlite 110L for under $25. I can fill 16 buckets with a bag and still have a little left. Way cheaper then dirt, And easier to dispose of, so need for me to reuse. However it would save the time consuming task of rinsing the perlite.
are you using the tubes to provide a constant drip?
i water 1/2 before lights come on and after lights go out, then two times in the evening and two in the day. I drip for 15min at a time. Only issue I find is the more you water the more humidity, and the more I refill my res. Probably better to keep to that schedule or water more in the evening.

On a side note, you could water once a day or if you hand water you could go as long as three days (just check how your girls are after the second day). Also I don't just drip water, at the end of those lines I attach a T-connector and make a circle around the plants with it. Then I drill tiny holes in the circle every inch (maybe 7-10 holes).

I tried a actual dripper, but I thought that if it got plugged there could be some real troubles. Also believe more nutes reach all the roots due to the more dispersed dripping. I often use rain water (I feel its more natural and probably contains some micro minerals useful for plants) and it has a lot of "grit". I have not experienced a plug yet, but would suggest that at the end of your cycle you pull the T-connector off (just heat it with a lighter to loosen the distribution tubing) and blow it out.

perlite here costs $25 for 25 litres :(
Go to a garden center, ask about bulk. The store here doesn't put those bags on the shelf.
IMHO....the key to hempy is to allow it to dry out completely so when you do water it pulls the oxygen into the roots.

Check out WOH (World of Hempy) under the Hydro in the Drain to Waste sub-section
ill give it a college try.

So I finished up my grow for the season, and it looks like the perfect number of plants in a 4x4 tent is 9-12.

I like to use the equation that your dry weight is 20% of your wet weight, [Wet Weight x 0.2 = Dry Weight] and I should have just over 13oz from 10 plants (4 had poor yielding amounts, under 21 grams, one was under 14g)

Over all I'm very satisfied, the plants should have been begged another 15days and I'm sure a 1pound would easily be accomplished.

I am going to try the Hempy method next. Just experimenting with one or 2 plants to see the difference. Then will switch gradually. Currently in soil. Find I am seeing moisture stress too much for my likiing. I have one plant currently in DWC which is doing very very well. However, for my back and neck the weight of dealing with the res changes on one bucket is hell little lone 6. Perilite is light.... I will hand water I think to start... need to see some pics of your drain set up etc. I take it all the plants overflow is draining into the bucket under the table. Now do I have to use hydro nutrients for feeding. I use DNF for the DWC but I also have Jacks Classic 20-20-20 for my soil. At Canadian Tire 8.8 L of perilte was $6.99.. kind of pricey don't you think. Want to buy an 600 hps and saw one on Amazon for $125.00 Currently using LED. Built my own tent... 4x4 wood frame and then wrapped in panda plastic. Vent in and vented out... 2 fans inside... my brother made me a carbon filter.... I have a veg area in my crawl space... simple t5 and flourescents.....

Just built a perfectly sized square to fit in the tent. Lined it with poly, and then put a drain on it. The res is directly below the drain. You could easily add on a pipe to make it drain to outside the area. Then water and it drains back in again. I was using Hydro nutes. Hollands Secret was the line i used. As for the price of the perlite, try to find an actual gardening store. I bought a 113L bag for like $30.

How do you veg? Do you veg in the final pot or do you do hempy solo cups? How long do you veg for? Do you veg under hps?

I am thinking about doing 12/12 from seed in 1 gal hempys. Thinking of just popping seeds right into final bucket. @ $10 a pop I know they'll be female :)

Oh yeah I see the actual floor drain now!! Novel!!

Clone into rockwool cubes, or plant seeds into rockwool cubes. For the first week or two I actually hand water, i pore the water directly down, close to the stem (not all over the perlite) . This causes the tap root to grow down to the hempy space where the water sits. You can tell when it hits the lower water chamber, the growth explodes.

As for the lights, i clone under fluorescents, but for veg i do indeed use HPS (600w).

What do you think of this idea? sprout in Rockwool. Add to Hempy and put into tent under 12/12. I think it's worth a try. If the plants are just too small then I'll veg for a few weeks on the next run. I'm sort of going after less bushy plants with a main fat cola..
