I know a guy that does this every grow, he swears up and down that it gets more light to the buds, which it does. But then he is always dumbfounded as to why he only yields 2 zips per plant.... hmmm

because they read on the internet that it makes YUGE buds and they most likely dont know any better. or they do it and think they are better off but have nothing really to compare their results to.

I found that I needed to take off some fan leaves my last grow because they covered all the buds, it looked like all leaf

I know quite a few veteran growers who do what they call "defoliate" leaving very few fan leaves. They claim they get bigger yields and all areas of the plant receive more light. I guess they defoliate a good portion in veg. I dont practice it but I have seen some pretty plants that were defoliated/ lollipopped.

oh yeah i cut off the under growth too. I thought the OP was saying why do guys take 'all' fan leaves off. I grow mine quite large, and the lower growth ends up dying, so i like to focus growth on the top two feet or so of each plant. I'm def not pullin off all the fan leaves though.

I trim fan leaves in half when they are blocking lower bud sites. Other than that I don't pull any fan leaves until they are at least 75% dead.
