Good question, honestly i think autoflowers are very misleading and tempting. In my opinion they are meant for outdoors only, if the weather is not that great and summers are short. It can receive any amount of light and still produce flower, and more resilient to cold i believe. In theory anyone can grow autoflowers outdoors in any country, and that's the biggest plus for autoflowers.

But indoors i realized it makes no sense to grow autoflowers. I bought many auto seeds and now i kinda regret it.
Speed is not a factor because most autoflowers take longer than advertised, and they can take the same amount of time as photoperiods.
They are not that easier to grow in terms of nutes, pH etc. they are sometimes the same difficulty as photos, especially if Ruderalis gene is only 0,5%
Photos can be switched to 12/12 early after few weeks and grow in the same amount of time as autoflowers.
With photos there is less electricity consumed, more quality and potency, they allow for high stress training and transplanting, you can fix mistakes by vegging a bit longer, take clones etc..
It just doesn't make sense to grow autoflowers indoors in my opinion. I can't wait to grow these auto seeds i have and switch to photos..
And i never understood why some people try to extend the vegetation with autos indoors on purpose, wouldn't be better to just grow a photo then?

Heat
If you run autos in cooler temps 24 on all your cost are just lighting not heating during off times

Yeah that makes sense and you're right.
But then it brings another potential problem, running 24/0 shortens the lifespan of the light and it could burn out? A good LED is expensive, personally i'd rather pay some extra bills for heating than having to buy a new LED fixture :D HPS is cheaper but i've read somewhere it could be dangerous to run HPS 24/0, but i never used them so i only say what i heard.

Well it is just a theory
I personally don’t use autos

My opinion? Because as a new grower, the idea of harvesting a fully mature plant in 90 days from seed is super intriguing. They "seem" easier at a glance too.
This is the answer to the question.

people worry about timers, 12 on 12 off, it sure “sounds” easier to plant a seed, do “whatever you can” with it, and still get “results”

But then someone grows one, locks it out, it starts flower at 3 weeks and they get a 20gm yield and realize "FUCK. Auto's aren't easy after all"
I’ve came to the same exact feelings before. I was one of those guys the OP is talking about. You described what happened, not always, but often to me. I’d get a few great autos but most flowered way before anyone would ever want them to. For whatever reasons.
Then went to photos and everything’s been great since. :)

I'll take the photos in the top picture over the autos in the bottom picture any day!!!Last autos that I'll grow that aren't in living soil... I can't mix nutes right for shit!!!20220130_190135.jpg20220130_190223.jpg

Having grown autos and photos side by side for a couple of decades, I've never had ONE person EVER say they could tell a difference in the end result. Some autos do take longer than advertised but that may well be 'grower influenced'....techniques count a bit more per strains.
That being said means I'm growing everything on 12/12 in a bloom tent after 3 weeks 24/0 veg tent.
All evidence is burned to a crisp.

I have a container of photoperiod Wedding Cake, and some Gelato 41, both purchased at a dispensary in Portland. The Mephisto 3 Bears OG is a nicer smoke, according to everyone in my group. Grow and smoke whatever you like....if you have a bad experience growing autos, then you might have sourced crappy seeds. I've sourced plenty of good and bad photo seeds.

Autos are better...for me.

YMMV and all that...
