Why do people grow their plants so small?

Hahahaha! Who wants like 5 ounces around...ok I do...Hahahahaha! :lol::lol::lol:
I didn't even consider greed into the equation.:-|
It seems like a lot of consistent work for just 1/8th or 1/4rd of an ounce. :?

But I suppose people do what works best for them and their individual situation.:blsmoke:
Some people can't smoke as much as they grow. Veg for 2 or 3 weeks, start flowering, then plant a few more plants while those are flowering and if you keep up this system then you will have consistent 1/8s or 1/4s. Who wants like 5 ounces just sitting around? Ok, I do but seriously. You can only smoke so much. No need to get greedy.

Ok now this makes sense to me.
If you had a mother plant, grew it to a good size, took a dozen or so clones, let them veg for about 3 or 4 weeks then flower them. Thtas an interesting concept for sure and not somehting I have tried.

I kind of thought that people who wanted to sell would use this method but what do I know.
And no I'm not asking because I'm interested in dealing.:-?
Going into my first grow I was gauging my flowering start time by the size of the plants and not a certain time. Anyways, space is probably the biggest determining factor aside from SOG, which obviously uses smaller plants.

Personally, I want to try SOG in the very near future and flower clones not long after they root.

Personally I would start stressing them and/or trimming them to manipulate them some. Just remember to leave ample room for flowering. I've ran into problems in the past with some indoor plants getting too big.
I am on my first grow ever and I asked the same thing. why go small? I got 13 babies all about 12-14" tall 43 days of veg still thinking of waiting for bigger but the temptation of flowering them sooner is what might make me go small.

Ok Just because you veg a plant for only a few weeks does not mean it will have skimpy small buds. It could very easily have a few very large dense sticky buds...it just wont grow as many buds per plant as a plant that was vegged longer.

more importantly, artificial lighting does not penetrate the canopy like the sun does....sooo its kind of a waste letting your plant get to tall when only the top half of the plant is going to grow decent bud because the lower half isnt gettign any light, so basicly the plant would be wasting energy trying to make little airy crappy buds down below when it could be focusing all of its energy on a few primo buds. Thats why when it comes to indoor growing having more smaller plants is usually better than a couple very tall plants.

Unless of course you have a bunch of 1000w lights :hump:

Im pretty stoned right now so im probably not making much sense but I think I was clear enough hahaha

Yes this is true!!! I just thought the general idea of growing a nice plant was to focus on growing a nice healthy plant first and foremost and THEN flower,( making sure to leave ample room for this extra growth.)

Flowering a plant after just 14 or 21 days from seed just seems really premature but I honestly didn't ask because I think it is a stupid idea or irrelevant but just more out of curiosity.

Thanks ladies and gents for the insight.
I think for most people its a height problem. If your growing inside you can't let them get too tall. Most are growing in closets ,cellers ect. You have to hang your lights and be able to keep the plants height enough distance away from the lights.

Height and light issues for me. If I want bigger plants I need an electrician, just to run a 1000W HID. Newer house here "central CA." are coming w/ 15 amp breakers and 1000w HID pull 9."4??" amps, add a fan and I'm maxed out. Even w/ high ceilings height is an issue.

Hey I'm not even saying that bigger buds are better. I have had some excellent tasty treats from smaller buds. I'm not saying at all that the bigger the plant the better the buds. No No!

Artificial light don't penetrate the plants like sunlight does but you can maipulate your plant to make the most out of this as well. I would never let a plant grow naturally tall under lights. I always clip them after the 5th node and then after I start bending them so that I get more compact bushy plants.

I'm so NOT suggesting that growing bigger plants are better. I'm just more curious than anyhting.

thanks guys. very interesting to learn this stuff.

I totally totally understand this. What I am wondering is why one would just veg their babies from seed for only a few short weeks. You can still have a 2 foot plant that is older and more compact. I'm probably not gonna have a 1000 watt either. :-|
My inddor plant will be smaller. just wondering
thanks ribbet.
I would think for a lot of growers its light penetration, why have a 5' tall plant when your lights only penetrating down 2'. some growers can't grow outside or dont have 1000w lights IMO thats why you see a lot of smaller plants

So most people so height.
Interesting.
thanks:mrgreen:

Honestly if you are going to keep the plant small anyways I dont think age would really make a huge difference, other than the fact that it would take a little longer for it to start showing preflowers under the 12/12 schedule.

And I know you keep saying babies from seed but If you happen to be growing from clones, that foot tall plant that was vegged for only a week after being cut is the same age as the mother plant it was taken from.

Personally I would rather have 100 plants in a SOG style setup with 1 main fat cola. I mean the main cola is the best anyways right?

The people that say height is the main reason probably dont even realize that artificial light does not penetrate very deep.
by saying that the main reason is height is saying that if you COULD you would grow a taller plant which obviously wouldn't be good because they are most likely growing with low wattage lights or cfl's?

You don't think age makes a differnce?
Taking clones and vegging them and flowering makes perfect sense to me but vegging from seed for 14 to 21 days seems like a waste to me.

I have seen some really frail looking plants that have been grown like this and just wondered why one would want to do this.

The SOG idea makes a lot of sense to me. In fact I find that extremely interesting and will probably be trying it in the near future. I even have these clone boxes I bought at Lee Valley a couple of years ago that i have never used and when I get a really nice mother growing I will try that.

Not a 100 :-? for me. Maybe just 5 or 6.:blsmoke:

Yes! Low wattage lighting. :-| Right! Thats a good point. Tis is true because i am presently wanting to start an indoor grow and I don't have the proper set up. Right now I only have cfl's for my future seedlings while I work on building a grow room. Its time and $ that are holding me back and that probably is a consideration that a lot of people have to take worry about.
Yes! Makes sense.
Thanks whiny!!! ;)

I would'nt think its so much of a time question as it is a heighth issue, one thing that needs to be considered is that the plants normally double if not triple in size during flowering, so if it only takes 14 or 21 days to reach a foot tall your looking at a 2 or 3 foot plant by the time your done

thats not really true especially for indica dominants. :peace:

But like I said, everyone is worried about height issues but the major thing is light penetration. Even if you could grow a 6 ft tall plant why would you do that with cfl's or even a 600w hps.

Everything your saying I already said on page 2. And yes It is partly a height issue because your height needs to match your penetration

What if its inside of a box. 21 days after sprouting. its maybe 1ft tall. Couldint you just add some Big Bloom to it during 12/12 and it max your yeild??
