Why Can’t the G.O.P. Get Real With Black Voters?

With every news cycle focused on Donald J. Trump’s latest misstep, it’s easy to overlook the fact that his campaign has drawn record low support from African-Americans — and that this achievement, as it were, illuminates something worrisome within the Republican Party itself.

As usual, this year’s convention featured African-Americans playing highly specific public roles: as speakers, surrogates, attendees and delegation leaders; they delivered sermons in praise of God and Mr. Trump; spoke of black poverty, unemployment and jobs; and berated the Black Lives Matter movement, offering stringent promises of a swift return to “law and order.”

This black hyper-visibility was intentional, a symbolic corrective for the convention’s astonishing lack of diversity: Of the 2,472 delegates, only 18 were black. It is the lowest percentage on record, lower even than 1964, the year the party selected Barry Goldwater as its presidential nominee.

Since that disastrous campaign, the Republicans have at least talked about reconnecting with African-Americans. In 2013, the Republican National Committee rolled out its “Growth and Opportunity Project,” a critical self-assessment intended to prevent the party’s share of minority votes from slipping further.

The rise of Mr. Trump and his brand of racial populism has undermined nearly all the report’s recommendations on minority outreach. Among black voters, 90 to 94 percent hold unfavorable views of the nominee. By current polling accounts, he is winning between 4 to 9 percent of the black vote. Sally Bradshaw, one of Jeb Bush’s top advisers and a co-author of the 2013 report, recently announced that she was leaving the party, citing Republicans’ decision to nominate “a bigot.”

let's not forget that he's only getting 13% of hispanics in florida.

mccain and romney both got around 30% or more and still lost.

no way to get to 270 for trump without florida. hillary has about a dozen paths to 270 that don't include florida, but she will get it anyway.

It's great humor throughout but at 2:20 to 4:20, he puts a wry spin on the question you ask.

The black community should look at Obama's dismal record and already be voting GOP.

Jobs numbers just came out this morning announcing 255k jobs were created, so did you create one for say...1 black man, 2 maybe?

Put your money where your mouth is and stop your bitching and hire a black man if you're so concerned about black unemployment.

With all these business owners here on RIU I wonder how many of them has given a job to a Black man/woman?

I've hired lots of black people, mostly women. One robbed me for 18k and now is fucked. The only black dude I hired was stealing fuckin roast turkey and got caught by another manager lol. Another woman got into some kinda legal trouble outside of work so she stopped showing up. All the others were awesome. I think some of the best guys I've ever worked with are Jamaicans, they're hard workers in kitchens. Hired a white chick who ended up addicted to heroin and she tried to steal and got caught by her friend who worked there too. Had a white kid who did blow in the bathroom and got fired. Another white dude and chick who were fooling around in the walk in. They quit once confronted.

It's a revolving circus of millennials pretty much who think they're hard workers but get showed up by people twice their age and then turn to crime of some sort to get more cash. Race hasn't mattered, but age has.

Yes I have -- black men, Hispanic, Asian, women and white men. Not that their race, gender or ethnicity were important to the job. The key is before the search to identify the attributes for the job, and rank them. Then screen each applicant who meets the basic requirements with the exact same open ended questions for those attributes and allow the person to tell you about themselves. It works. Not every person we hired on my team worked out and sometimes we searched for months to find a person that met all of the most important attributes. Our success rate was good and we gradually put together a team I'm proud to be a part of. And it was a diverse team.

Affirmative action is not about quotas, its about finding good applicants with diverse backgrounds. In the case of minority applicants of whom, by simple arithmetic, there are fewer, you have to spend a bit more time finding applicants for the interview. After that it's up to the applicant to win the job.

Ha! He was an interesting guy. Valedictorian of his class, asian actually not white now that I think of it, but he never went to college since he just fell into coke hard. Ended up in rehab and afterwards when he was clean I took him back and gave him a second chance... Until he relapsed and called and said he was in rehab again. Poor guy.

No doubt, but since Mr. Comé Mierda was bitching about black unemployment I wanted to see what he has done about it.

And for all those who has given any minority a job...big ups to you!

I have given plenty of minorities jobs. At this time I do not have employees... How about you? Have you employed 20+ minorities or are you just a hypocrite??

nobody gives people jobs except maybe to an undeserving nephew by a jerk-boss. People are hired to work a job where they are expected to produce more than they are paid. This line of "giving" people jobs is usually used to justify the exceptional advantage given to the wealthy. Not you of course.
