Why can I see roots at the top of my soil

That's a positive sign imo you don't get that ime unless you're keeping them well watered...
It appears that light doesn't bother roots as much as some say, this isn't my thing but it shows happy white roots after a couple months exposed to light?

You're right enough mate it's green with algae he uses a watering can to keep the saucers filled with water rather than water them in the conventional way.

Those are not roots. Way too thin. It does look like straw though.
