Who doesn't tip?

An Applebee's waitress who posted a receipt with a note from a pastor complaining about the automatic gratuity added to the bill on the Internet was fired on Wednesday after the pastor complained to her manager.
Chelsea Welch, the waitress, wrote in an email to Yahoo News that the pastor (who has since been identified as Alois Bell) told Welch's manager at the St. Louis-area Applebee's that the ensuing firestorm had "ruined" her reputation.
"I give God 10%," Bell wrote on the receipt, scratching out the automatic tip and scribbling in an emphatic "0" where the additional tip would be. "Why do you get 18?" (There were more than eight people in Bell's party, triggering the auto-tip.)
Welch, who snapped a photo of the bill from a fellow server and uploaded to Reddit, defended her right to post the receipt. "I thought the note was insulting, but also comical," she told Consumerist.com. "And I thought other users would find it entertaining.”

I tip EVERY time, even if the service was horrible. If the service was good they get at minimum 20%, and if the service was horrible, I give them ~5-10%.

I do understand people who don't tip if they get absolutely shit service, but I don't have any respect for individuals who go out to eat knowing they won't be able to tip.

I usually tip but 1 time I couldn't get the waitress attention and get a refill on my coffee, she was too busy flapping her gums with her friends.
So when I left she found a note saying I looked for your service you look for your tip.
And I eat there all the time.

20% always

It's a tough way to make a living
So is being a garbage man, working at a steel mill, being a farmer, and a million other jobs. Tipping is bullshit and making it compulsory defeats the entire purpose. We should do away with the tipping system entirely.

It was a large group bill with individual checks. The restaurant already had added an automatic gratuity due to the large party. So the guy didn't get stiffed the customer was just being a dick for writing what he did. 20% makes it easy math for me

garbage men and mill workers don't make $2.86 an hour like waiters / waitresses did when i did the job.. they actually get paid an hourly wage you could live on, waiters / waitresses depend on tips for a living..
if you don't want to tip, don't go out to places that require a tip, eat at mcdonalds and wendy's instead.. simple as that imo..

i always tip, over tip as a matter of fact, been there done that..

Nobody stops and tips me when we patch that nasty pothole in the road, instead they honk, flip me off, and generally act stupid.

I still tip for good service. If it's too busy, I'll be uncomfortable so I just turn and leave. If I can't be seated in a back booth, I'll be uncomfortable, so I just leave. If I can't be comfortable, I get anxious and that makes wait staff nervous. I don't like bad service, so I make sure I'm comfortable, before I put unreasonable expectations on others.

I don't see where it said it was a large group. It says more than 8. Any server worth a shit should be able to manage a table of 8. I am quite happy to tip commensurate with the service I receive. I despise the auto gratuity for the simple reason that in my experience server's use it as an excuse to slack off and not do their job because they know they're getting the tip. I don't have a problem with the concept of tipping when it's done right. I really do dislike the auto tip though.

Edit. I read the post and see that it was for a group of 20, and yet the total bill was only $200 small lunch.

I am guilty of always over tipping. I never worked in the industry myself but have family who struggle doing so.

I can only think of one time when I didn't leave a tip, the waitress was a self centered bitch and the service was terrible.

She was flirting with the cook when we came in, there was nobody else there and when she saw us come in she rolled her eyes and angrily grabbed some menus and headed to our table. Everything she said was sort of in a "hurry up, order, and GTFO" sort of tone, we got ready to order and she informed us that the only things we could order on the menu were sandwiches and hamburgers.

I guess so the chef wouldn't have to cook very long and they could get back to flirting, we got no refills and almost the entire time we were there she was nowhere to be found. Then a group of people showed up and ordered several items that we were told we couldn't order, steak, enchiladas, etc. My cousin wanted to leave without paying lol.

We never went back, and the place is closed now, I wonder why.

The only time I fought gratuity was at a "fancy restaurant" on Broadway in Farmington. ::cough K.B. Dillon's cough::

The food is mediocre at best and priced WAY too high. I had an incident with a saucy little waiter who was in a very bad mood that night. He spilled water in my lap and slammed my food down so hard I was spattered with the contents. He was surly and sarcastic. It was a celebratory dinner and I was one of the honored guests. I couldn't leave. I refused to pay the tip. He brought out the manager. I showed him my wet lap and slop spattered shirt. I got my meal for free.

Haven't been back since.

I know a girl that leaves "life tips" on the napkins for the waiters. I asked if she frequented the same places and she said yes. I just smirked and nodded knowing full well she's had balls wiped on her hamburger buns and other gross things done to her food for that type of behavior. She thinks it's funny, it's really quite pathetic.

Tip them, because life can deal anyone a shit hand that causes them to end up in the food service business and you could be the next pizza guy delivering to my door or the waiter/waitress serving my food,Im pretty sure you would want people to tip you if youre pay was dependant on it, I at least take that much into consideration.

my problem with automatic gratuity is the same problem i have with welfare. in my experience, when somebody knows that they are automatically getting their tip, the work rate and service, 8 times out of 10, is sub par.
