Whisper Quiet Stealth Carbon Scrubbing

I have a 2x2.5 grow tent. My scrubber is a 4" fan/filter combo from Htg. It runs at 100 percent and is quite audible. What can I do to drastically reduce sound? I was thinking of slowing it down via fan speed controller? Would that lower volume, or should I invest in a $50 muffler?

Yes, if you slow it down via a speed controller, it directly affects the volume of air movement. There are several DIY threads on making a muffler to quiet the fan down as well as the option to buy a muffler.
My .02 is going to go with a speed controller because a 4" fan is more than enough for a 2x2.5 tent and then maybe a diy muffler.

Wouldn't the size and power of the fan that Smokenpassout needs be related to the lights and the amount of heat they generate in his tent? If Smokeandpassout is using an hps in his tent perhaps he'll need all the cfm that his 4" fan can crank to keep the tent cool. I am setting up a grow in a 2.5 x 2 ft gorilla tent also and will use about 600 watts of LED. I plan to use my 6" vortex fan with an 18" long Phresh filter that I still have from previous grows in a larger tent. I plan to use a speed controller to lower the fan speed to the point at which I can still maintain a good growing temperature in the tent. I'll also be using a store bought muffler. I'm not sure how much less than the 400 cfm rating of my fan I'll be able to go to maintain proper temperatures in the tent until I actually set things up.

all thats inside the mufflers is convoluted foam, like a mattress topper from walmart.

I also added butyl rubber like dynamat to the outside of my fan and ducting.

Thanks for the suggestions! I am going to get the twenty dollar fan speed controller first, as it is the cheapest option! My lights are all Kessil Led by the way, they are cooled by an internal fan, so no need to cool them. My fan is a 4" 170cfm.

i wouldnt slow down the fan, unless it is overkill, which it is not.

harbor freight has a speed controller, that is almost identical to the fan controllers out there. just a potentiometer.
