Where to top clones?

Ive got 8 girls who have stretched lots in places and the nodes are fairly uneven. I know I'll have a lot of wasted stem, but would it be alright to just top when the next node forms? The growth ive got at the top is the most closest together, so I'd have to also strip all the growth below too.
It's my first time topping and growing horizontally - usually vertical trellis so im a total noob.

Not sure if the rules apply differently to clones, but as far as seedlings go I top/FIM mine no earlier than their 3rd node. Typically I wait a little longer than their 3rd node though, more like 4th.

Clones don't have equal spacing between the nodes.
Ive heard that's the usual technique but is there actually a reason or will a few extra nodes and inches of stem cause any issues?

Top wherever you want, as long as there's at least 2 growth tips below the cut. Let those two growth tips grow out and tie down, or top higher and have more mains to tie down. Not difficult.
These growth tips weren't quite even, but you clip right above them, then the two will balance out with training.

There is no point in topping a clone that was taken from a sexually mature plant ( thats when the nodes dont grow symmetrically, or rather when nodes are not even). Its too late to get the desire effect, which is to created two new flower site sprouts where there was one.
It cant be done when the nodes are uneven.

Hey thanks for that I didn't realise that's why it happened. Ive read that with some pinching and bending you can get them to even out, which should be good enough for my purposes. :)
 
If you're wondering where on a plant to pull clones from.....I cut my clones from the bottom branches of a plant. Odds are they would not be productive at harvest time anyway. I've done this for years and not had an issue.
