Where to place the temperature probe

The temperature/humidity guage I bought has an outdoor probe I would like to use. It is basically a 1/8" diameter metal cylinder about 1/2" long. Originally I intended to just tape it to the side of the flower chamber 18" above the medium level but after giving it a bit of thought I'm not sure if it needs to be in some sort of light trap.

If you have any knowledge on the subject I would greatly appreciate your help.

I have mine on string attatched to the hood, so it can be adjusted to canopy lvl easily.
