Where did chemical smells originate?

Well, I've heard all the stories of chem dog and also listened to Nspectahs potcast where he is asked a similar question. What's everyone's thoughts on the combination of genetics that was and is chemdog. Where do the chemical scents come from? Were there strains pre 90s that had chem aromas before the chemdawgs were made into legends?

An interesting factor to the story of the original chem bag seeds popped by Joe brand, correct me of I'm wrong but chem d was the only true Indica representation where as chem 1 and 4 as with the others were more of a longer flowering, tall bud structure, sativa leaning. So I would assume a longer flowering type sativa comes into the mix somehow

Had to go back and listen to CSI nspectahs potcast again just to get all my facts strait. He did say chem 1 is a 12 + weeker, that's got more hazy fluffy buds. He thinks chem 91 looks a lot like some of the landrace indicas that were around the oregon area in the 80s. He also says possibly a Mexican indica, or indica sativa hybrid from the early days of oregon.
I would speculate its got some mix of Afghani, possibly Mexican genetics. Wonder what the sativa is though if it's truly part of the genetic makeup
Funny how og kush is said to come from Florida but proliferated of the west coast and chemdawg is said to come from Oregon and proliferated on the east coast. Not to derail things, I just love weed history and how it intertwines

Reason that chemdog was popular on the east coast and OG Kush on the west coast is because when those strains traveled to those locations they didnt resemble any strain of said coast
