When to Clone?

hey everyone,
so i have a nice batch of northern lights on the go, about 6 weeks old with 5-8 nodes, and was wondering when i am supposed to take cuttings for best results? This is my first grow and i want to keep one mother plant to take my cuttings from. So i was thinking about swithing to flowering within a week. I figure i need to wait till pre flower to determine sex before i can take cuttings, so how long do i wait?

Take your cuttings 2-3 weeks before your flowering plants are done. It takes about 1-3 weeks to clone so when you move your vegging plants into flower, you can start your clones into veg mode.

I clone for 2 weeks, and my new batch is 2 weeks old when i take a clone from them. Thats when you want to top the plant too, so i just top off a clone on every plant and use the cutting for my next batch

ok i think i get it but have another question...
i am a newb when it comes to growing, so this may be a stupid question but wont the cutting be growing buds if i take it when the flowering is almost over? I have actually never seen a plant in flowering before so i dont know what to expect lol, i mean i see pictures but its not the same. Do buds not grow on the lower branches i will be cutting?

i would sugest taking clones, rooting them and then sexing them.. that way ur moms have more veg time and less stress... im not a pro but i have heard that once u put into flower and then revert to veg, the quality decreases.. agn i could be wrong but this is what i have read in a HT mag.doin this way will also allow ur moms to fill out and get bushier allowing more tops for clones.... i always top early in veg(after 3-4) nodes so it fills out and stays small... as for ur last post, i dont know y u wanna clone late in bud if u wanna keep moms around... and buds will grow where ever theres nodes... to make the most of ur node buds, look up supercropping... cheers

I never got why you would have a mom plant

1) you need more room to keep the plant
2) once you make a bunch of clones off your best plant, they all become your mother plant!
3) you have to top your plants anyways, so why not clone the top, which is still from your mother plant's genes, making it like a mother plant

well if you have 50 clones going already (i assume you would if you want to have the same volume going through) its still 1 per plant, its just replacing it. Sometimes you can take 2 clones off a small one if you are worried about losing some clones

yes but in a sog u wanna root and flower.. u dont really veg so ur clone is already at like 6inces, not much to clone... plus if i was to top my plant for a clone, ide want at least a week to recover b4 i flower... i understand what ur saying but.. u dig what i am??? its 1 thing if ur growing or perpetuating but in a true no veg sog, a mom is good to have

i thought that everytime you clone a clone, it becomes the next generation, like if you clone the clone of the clone...etc....then you eventually ruin the genetics? i dont know if its true i read it somewhere, i figured thats why you kept mothers.....
anyways to clarify (feel stupid for not getting this lol) so i take my cuttings off of my plant that is in Veg...while the others are a few weeks from finishing....
problem is this is my very first grow.....i dont have any plants in flower and im not sure of any of the sexes....so do i take a cutting from each plant and then keep track of which ones are which. then once i figured out which ones were female and the best ones i use that one cutting to start my cycle?
again sorry if im seeming stupid but i have been trying to figure this out for awhile now and keep getting so many different views and suggestions its hard to figure out what everyone is saying haha
thanks for the replaies so far guys already a big help!

well it works for a lot of people so do whatcha gotta do. And the way i have it it gives them 2 weeks to recover before flowering

nah.. a clone of a clone of a clone is the same as the mom unless u flower and then revert and yes, take a clone and keep track of the plant u got it from...
