When does the stink start?

I have three foot tall and a few inches, I notice when I massage up and down on the branches around the node's I get the stink on my fingers, do plants only start stinking good during flowering?

Some strains just plain smell more than others. I've had 3wk. old VEGGING plants stink up my basement.... on the other hand, i've also had some that hardly smell at all, even late in flowering! Kinda pisses me off when they don't stink, i love that sweet skunky aroma!
