When does flowering actually begin?

I have heard it starts as soon as you switch to 12/12. I also heard that it starts as soon as bud forms... Is there anyone who can clarify?

there are 3 factors that determine whether a plant will flower: sexual maturity, photoperiod, and temperature. now, indoor flowering is induced by altering the photoperiod to 12/12 and presumably the flower-promoting hormones like gibberellin and cytokinin begin to see an increase in production very shortly thereafter. however, a plant can take up to a week or more to physically show signs of flowering after the 12/12 cycle is initiated. can go a bit more in depth if you like...or maybe i answered your question already

When I see a pistil that's when I know she's flowering. Which is good enough for me. lol
If there's a bud, then she has been flowering for a little bit.
Some people go by when you flip to 12/12, but a plant won't start flowering until she's mature enough.

pistil formation does not necessarily indicate flowering, it simply indicates that the plant is sexually mature.

That's true, but if it's on 12/12 the pistils will multiply from there on. lol Im not disagreeing, but getting clarification on this might be hard. lol

When people say they're 40 days in flower, they mean 40 days since they switched to a 12/12. Otherwise, you have a different time for every plant.

When I say i am 40 days in flower, it does NOT mean that It is 40 days since I switched to 12/12.

I determine flowering not by the presence of pistil (as that is just an indication of a plants sexual maturity), but when the beginning of clusters, also known as flowers, form.

You can contact just about any breeder, and they will tell you the same thing. When u order ceeds, and the description says 55-60 days, that is not from the 12/12 flip. It is from when the plant is actually flowering.

what about 12/12 from seed?
The plant has to be mature, on 12/12, and once that pistil shows, it is then flowering.

People who go 12/12 from seed are trying to reduce veg time as much as possible.

I see pics with the description "5 days into flower" with absolutely no flowers. Those breeders are talking about outdoor grows where there is no switch to 12/12.

Flowering begins from 12/12 flip. Unless you are a republican, living in a bubble

So, if u plant an indica plant, lets say Afghan Kush, and veg for 3 weeks. The plant is not yet sexually mature. No preflowers, no alternating nodes. You flip to 12/12, and have a good 14 days of streatch. Then the plant takes an additional 56 +/- days to finish. Now you are saying that Afghan Kush takes 10 weeks to flower?

Please, do yourself a favor. Since you took the time to respond to my response, take the time now to send a couple of breeders the same question. (Randomly choosen, email Bomb Ceeds, Royal Queen Ceeds, and G13. See what they have to say.

So how do they determine that the plant is flowering then? There is no "switch". Outdoors, a plant is in flower once there is actually A flower. Plants will begin to flower before it is 12 hours of sun light, 12 hours of darkness.

Wow, look at you arguing over who has the best use of terms. Every single grower that I talk to and just about every person on here can be heard to say "I switched her to flower" or "since I put her in flower", personally my calendar is marked according to the day "she joined her mom in the flower room".

It would appear that everyone is correct. People who just grow badass herb use the grower as the reference on when to say "flower" and this is the generally accepted lingo. Other people argue that everyone else is wrong and if only they'd educate themselves (wait, we all recognize that this is how someone says "I'm smarter than you and that is very, very important to me, even though I don't know you") they would see just how much they are embarrassing themselves by using a term the way the community generally uses it. "Please, do yourself a favor"...what a pompous ass.

lol, subcool has even said right on this site that flowering starts at the flip to 12 / 12.. so much for that theory.

I say you keep up with both numbers, when you switch to 12/12 and when it starts bud'ing (forming clusters)

lol can be done easy I did it with some bag seed for a fun experiment and I ended up with a plant about 15cm tall ( growing in small pot) with a crown nug bout 4 grams lol was fun lil experiment coz didn't really do shit besides make sure it had water and had less then 12 hrs light that was it no ferts nothing and she grew fine lol weed called weed for a reason it grows fairly well and can also adapt very well yes some strains are a lot more touchy then others but I suggest if you can't grow a plant can't tell it's sex then you should not grow UNTILL you've done enough research save the trouble and keep buying you weed UNTILL you know the basics of what your doing and how you gunna do it preparation is the key to a great grow over an alright grow you'll just be letting your self down putting all ya hopes into a grow only to be let down severely to what you imagined it would be... Thinking and hoping you'll get a 6" plant and then you end up with plant 2" anyways good luck with ya growi and expanding your knowledge
