When can I transplant my seedling?

This seedling is growing roots through the bottom of this little pot. Theres a lot of holes on the bottom of the pot. The stem looks way to fragile to transplant to bigger pot. So i put the pot inside a cup leaving the roots dangling from bottom of pot. Is it bad to do that? What should I do? I attached pics. Thanks.

Hey big smoke, I personally would say your young one is strong enough for a transplant.. I have transplanted at this stage. However I would be very careful and spray soil with water before hand :leaf: ..

I would personally let it get a little more rootbound and let it develop its second nodes more, unless there's an emergency or real reason to transplant now it's just going to be some unneeded delay to it's growth.

I'm just a believer of not disturbing a plant in a small container like that or a solo cup until its leaves have come close to reaching the rim of the pot. It won't kill it moving it now, I just can't see a real reason too.

I'd give it another week, then transplant.

dont you think leaving it like this for another week would be hazardous for the root system when transplanting ? as they would grow into the lower cup through the pot the seedling is already in ?

I've left plants in solos for way longer than they should have been (4+ weeks), they were rootbound to hell, way outgrowing their containers with no problems.. I just think in his instance it's a little too young to be moving, it's barely starting its second nodes... another week would be more like a security buffer.

But everyone's opinion on this will differ, some will say move it now, some will give it some more time... I'm just in the latter group for this one because of how small it still is, despite roots showing at the bottom I just don't think it's ready yet.

Hey brother. It's not rootbound. The roots will always reach the bottom of the container.
Think about what @Kinkz said about solo cups. We call them beer cups. That's a lot smaller than your pot and he kept them in there for four weeks.

Hey chef420.. My concern was the roots growing through the "solo cup" into the glass cup he has underneath, which looks like it has a medium inside, Thus leaving like this for a longer period of time would almost make it impossible to transplant without breaking the root system

My concern is its being over loved. I know a guy on here that killed his first few plants from messing around with them too much. Transplanting etc. I'm only on my second grow but one thing I've learned is to be patient and let it happen.

Some soil fell through as i watered. Thats why it looks like medium in the lower cup. I emptied it out. The idea is just to leave them dangling in the lower empty cup. I was just wondering if it's bad to do that because I always hear that light is bad for the roots. and I have that pot in a grow tent with a strong LED light. So the roots must be seeing some of that light. I don't know if that light is damaging The Roots.

Big smoke yes light can damage your root system bro also leaving them to dangle in an empty cup could dry them out, personally I would transplant, if you transplant correctly and have your next pot ready its a very straight forward procedure, this ultimately will make your seedling alot happier and give it the root space to flourish

id let it get 6 inches tall at least before transplant,,just how i do it..why chance hurting the fragile root so young...gain nothing by risking it,,6 to 7 inches and ur pretty solid not worrying bout any damage...just my 2 cents

The roots are more at risk getting hurt being left to grow with no medium, certainly I wouldn't transplant at this stage for no reason but with the current roots outgrowing the pot and nowhere to go, transplanting is a logical option, I currently have 6 seedlings at this stage roots perfect not transplanting until at least a week, just with big smokes unfortunate situation I would transplant just now..just my opinion, I'm sure this young plant will have a good life either way

im totally confused by what ur saying.."no medium" and the pic u posted explains what?is that a pic of what ur saying would be beneficial to transplant or a week of growth after tht picture is best time for transplant..just happened to be on here as i got ur alert so figured id ask in case ur still on here

oh i think i understand what ur sayin,,,looking at the OP pics i assumed he had his little pot on top of the other cup for picture to be taken..but ya he would def wanna take tht off the other pot b4 the roots do grow into it..im assuming thts what u mean,idk..just bullshittin to pass some time
