I work at a growing media facility and I can honestly (at least at our plant) say the materials used for the lower end topsoil will vary. The mid tier topsoil will normally consist of compost.

Alot of proper old school guys will not grow without a lil real soil ie a bit of decent top soil in there mix its due to stubbornness i think cos its what they know and it works long as its clean and your ratio is right it aint a bad thing also i cant imagine for micros etc it be bad neither as for growing in straight top soil i wouldnt unless you somewhere special and growing outdoors

Why its the easiest way of growing pretty much anything be it weed veg whatever its the most forgiving medium imo what is it that scares you about it im curious?
