The coffeeshops are nice to have but I smoked (and re-sold) cannabis before I had one in the area too, it's not the best thing. It's really no different from having a star bucks or a bakery in the street once you get used to having them. The reason coffeeshops could be started was perhaps the best thing: mild laws (they basically just did it, what's the worst thing that could happen... not jail time...). Yet, 6th lowest crime-committing country in the world. At the same time rapists and murderers get relatively mild penalties too so maybe not the best thing...

But a reason it's popular might be the worst thing: small simple yet expensive houses with tiny so called post stamp size garden, if any.
