So I'm getting a kit from timber that they say is 56% efficient. Is there anything in the near future from cree that will beat that? I've searched and can't find much.
Whats in the future to replace cree 3590.

A little buyer's remorse is guaranteed with technology moving this fast . You might be waiting for months for a new chip to come out (boo, no light in the mean time), then you get chip (yay! best light ever)...then a month later a better chip is released.
There's always going to be a slightly better chip around the corner.
Maybe, the real question is when do the current 3590 owners expect to upgrade? It would take a real step forward to compel people to replace their 3590s. I want to see the chip that makes that happen

buddy, at this point, if you are spending big bucks, don't worry, it will pay for itself. As long as the lights work as long as advertised (50000 hours, 12 years of 12/12) you are laughing. Keep in mind people are still growing with old HPS technology that is 40+ years old. Even if you could get better next year, and 10 times better in 5 years, it will not make what you got less good than it is now. I am still rocking old panels from AREA 51 I bought probably 4 years ago and they are still running, as far as I can tell, 100%. They may be old technology but they still grow the same dank as they did when I first got them. Not a single COB has ever failed me, yet, knock on wood...

current citizens and the new veros coming out in 2 weeks already beat the 3590 in efficiency per watt (but only by 5-10%.) and especially watts per dollar (upwards of 50%).
the next cree bin and/or generation which is due out in the next 6 mos should also bump 5-20% over current 3590 efficiency. We'll see if they try to maintain their name-brand premium. the 3590 price has fallen almost 50% in a year amidst stiff competition

DE does not beat current COB efficiency at anything but lumens per dollar, and that gap is quickly closing now that you can buy $40-$60 chips that run out to 200-300+W each at HPS efficiency

finally, some deetz on the new crees.. that first sentence makes me sound like they are gonna work the premium train. they are gonna have to be something special to compete with the new veros that will be selling in the $20s, but people always have and always will value name brands regardless of actual value or performance (apple, gavita, etc). we have cheapish chips now pushing 200 lm/W but again thats meaningless without knowing what wattage 700 mA corresponds to...its clear.... the new cree 3695....

i like the sound of the meanwell tech that is universally applicable. hopefully cree doesnt hog it with exclusivity

I was just recommending a great light source is all. I mean for 370-500 bucks you can get a DE fixture and crank out a minimum of 2.25 units on any strain.
