Well since I missed all the drama about light choices , you can grow with ANY light system
HPS / MH systems are the " norm " , some hood systems can be had for a couple hundred bucks. One place to check for cheap prices , is craiglist , I grabbed an 600w Virtual Sun with ballast and bulbs for $90 bucks. They provide great penetration for the money , but can bring heat.
CFL will grow plants ( I constructed a " hood " system ) running 10 100w / 150w y-sockets with either all 5000k /6400k or as it is now with 2700k for mixed spectrum. Ceiling mounted with adjustable chain for height control. Lights can be "dimmed " by switching off sets of 2 as needed. Heat is nominal because of open room design. I only fan the plants to provide air flow and movement. I have upgraded some of the bulbs to maxlite 11273 with 5500 lumens each . This is by far the EASIEST light system to get new growers going.
This is my main AUTOFLOWER grow light choice.
LEDS ( for me ) are run as Flowering Stage , although it can grow vegging plants. I run dual Mars Hydro 900s ( mid level price ) in tents. They are on 12/12 only to prolong life.
There is some heat to deal with from internal heat sinks. But overall they work great with my photoperiod strains. Most ( I should say just about all ) LED manufacturers " govern down " the LED efficiency by near half. This ensures that the led emitters ( diodes ) will last longer. They are by design power reduced. This is why DIY LED/ COB builders are whipping up monster light panels. This will be the NEW ERA of light systems. If you are looking for EXTREME LIGHTING , look up Cree builds with 3070/3590 components.
Running all of these systems cost me $90 bucks a month in power, big whoop.
T5/T8 fixtures ( long bulb Flouros ) are another option for the grower , but the bottom line is providing the most usable light for your plants. Nothing beats the sun.
Base your light choices on YOUR grow space not what others do.
