Hi all just wondering IF there is any benefit from smoking the actual plant compared to just the trichromes

The buds themselves have chemicals in them that give differents aromas and flavors that are not present in the trichomes. So yes, there is a benefit.

Unless you're smoking concentrates, we smoke the whole flower.

The trichomes are filled with oils that contain terpenes, flavonoids, etc. Probably more than the plant material itself. If they didn't, concentrates would be flavorless until they had terpenes added.

Yes the trichomes have these things in them that impart slightly different flavors, but the plant material in the buds has even more and tastes completely different than just smoking the trichomes.

Reason I ask is I get a bad cough and would like to stop smoking tobacco the plant matter

So if I wanted to grow specifically for hash ?

Would lots of small buds be better than a couple of donkey dicks due the larger surface area

You can grow to make hash if you want, that works fine. How do you smoke though? Pipe? Joints? Blunts? Bong? Vaporizer? Get yourself a good bong or vaporizer and you get rid of most of the irritation caused by smoking.
